Yeah I had no idea until I heard this funny story. 

Why did he hate GnR? Weren't they a supporting act on their tour?

Kurt was extremely open-minded and a champion for LGBT rights so he regarded Guns 'N Roses, in particular Axl Rose, as the embodiment of everything that's wrong with a society that perpetuates homophobia and macho culture.
