elijahfan 26,056
No one has ever even suggested that Aura was supposed to the lead single. It leaked, but that doesnt mean anything. Whereas Gaga herself said Jimmy Iovine was on the fence between Sex Dreams and Applause for a long time. It is believed, from discussions fans have reportedly had with Gaga backstage, that she fought with the label to get Aura as the lead single, but lost, and leaked the song herself as a form of rebellion - so YES, it has been suggested. Of course, it is all unofficial but I think it's consistant with many clues we've had through the time, with Gaga tweeting Zedd about "**rq*" and saying how great the song was, Joe Germanotta saying he thought the best song on ARTPOP was a song called Burqa, Tara's Twitter statements, the ARTPOP app intro video being edited to Aura etc... Plus, let's not forget Gaga had meetings with Jonas Akerlund in summer 2012 where they most probably discussed ideas for an upcoming music video, most probably the Telephone continuation. And let's be honest 2 seconds here: Aura has always been the obvious Telephone continuation. I know many will have their opinions about what I say and what they think the truth is, and we'll probably end up staying in the blur forever here. But I'm a keen observer, and it takes a lot for me to be convinced, but this is what I think happened putting the pieces of the puzzle together. PS: Jimmy Iovine IS Interscope, so of course he was eyeing Applause and probably other songs than Aura.

luckythisway 2,610
I feel like a lot of the tracks we have on the album were already in talks for the album in 2012. She didn't record 15 entirely new tracks from the hip injury to November 2013 lol. But Aura, G.U.Y., Sexxx Dreams, ARTPOP, Mary Jane Holland, and Gypsy were talked about for sure in 2012. I feel like all of the tracks had been at least recorded as demos in 2012 except Venus (of course) and maybe Applause. I feel like people think ARTPOP was 100% scrapped and started over after she broke her hip, but most (if not all) of the songs that made the album were almost certainly recorded and in talks for the album. Heck, the album we got could be the same one we would've gotten, except a few lyric/production changes. We'll never know. But I don't think ARTPOP, musically, is really much different from the way it was in 2012. Yeah but the Applause demo breakdown indicates that there was more experimental elements on other demos, I'm only assuming, but I feel like the tracklist would have more songs but only half of the songs on 2013 ARTPOP

What backstage info has actually come true anyway? Very very little. It's wishful thinking. Aura was one of the first songs created for ARTPOP, yes. That does not equate to it being the original lead single. Nobody knows that except Gaga herself.

In the end, the era is over, and there's no use debating endlessly over those issues. The era was what it was, it's just that from what I gathered, I do think Gaga had planned a pretty different beginning to it. And I'm fairly sure Gaga had other plans for Aura. In the end, we do know for sure that the Telephone continuation we were promised never came, which tends to confirm things didn't quite go as planned...
