BornSimon 4,800
If you think people who criticizes the critics are clueless then what are the critics of the critics of the critics? Every time there is a thread about Gaga covering a rock song the first few pages are filled with complaints about her screaming. Users complained about her screaming when she covered 4 Non Blondes. Users said she screamed to much when she sang with The Rolling Stones. Users complained when she screamed during her performance with Yoko Ono. When Gaga performed a Rock rendition of Poker Face on Jonathan Ross people complained about her screaming. Now the same people are saying she screamed to much with this cover of If I Ever Lose My Faith In You. All these complaints are easily explained by the fact that the clear majority of users on this site solely listen to Electronic Dance Music and Top 40 Pop. Not all members of GGD only listen to Dance Music, but most do. Which is totally fine, but there is nothing "ignorant" or "cringey" about users who listen to Rock music explaining to other fans that screaming is encouraged and not discouraged in Rock music. No one said Rock N' Roll was synonymous with screaming, it's just not a bad thing. And you might want to revise your lists of artist who "know when to scream." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-xUwDARVb4 The thing is I don't understand why those who don't like the way she screams during these covers has to be dismissed with a simple "Meh, all you listen to is dance-pop anyway". It's not true. I listen to a lot of other artists, I've grown up with Nirvana, Marilyn Manson, Guns n Roses, and I happen to think that Gaga doesn't really know when to scream and ruins perfectly fantastic classic songs that she could have slayed but decides to instead scream her way through. The first time she covered What's Up I thought it was appalling and while this wasn't as bad I wish she'd just sang it because she would have done an amazing job. BUT, let me say one thing, when she did What's Up in Barcelona and I was in the audience I loved it, so MAYBE this screaming thing she does just doesn't translate well on video for me. BornSimon 4,800
lol right? I was like Courtney? My Courtney? No. I see what you mean, but rock music in general has a laid back approach. There's no reason in bringing up how some acts don't like to scream. Knowing when to scream and when not to has never been a quality of the genre. It's just the style of some artists that you mentioned. I understand what you're saying, but I thought it was a little irritating the way people's opinions were being dismissed, so I thought I'd tell people "Look, rock doesn't necessarily mean screaming, there's rock stars out there who don't need to scream to show their emotions on stage". I am not one of those who are constantly criticising Gaga, this is literally the ONE thing I have ever criticised on these forums, and it may or may not have to do with the fact that she has (IMO) ruined some songs that I have grown up with when I know she could have slayed them. :p
SKANK 14,288
lol right? I was like Courtney? My Courtney? No. I'm a die hard Courtney fan, but she hasn't "sung" a song in years. Hole's first record is literally just a half hour of Courtney Love screaming in your ear. It was just a weird example for him to use. The thing is I don't understand why those who don't like the way she screams during these covers has to be dismissed with a simple "Meh, all you listen to is dance-pop anyway". It's not true. If you think her vocals didn't suit the song, that is fine. I was just addressing a trend in people complaining about her screaming to much during Rock performances. But then I loved this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2-5VAmOAz8 So perhaps I'm just not ok with Gaga screaming her way through these classics. I'm still overly excited at the prospect of her doing a rock record though.

I guess it's just a personal preference. But yeah, the idea of Gaga doing a Rock record is very exciting!
giskardsb 12,565
So what I meant was that the screaming simply does NOT suit every song, but Gaga doesn't seem to understand that. She is allowed artistic license, especially on rock songs. There is no "right" or "wrong" way to express how she sees fit. You don't have to like it, but it's not something Gaga needs to "understand."
Cody Draco 2,531
Seems like she ruined another performance with screaming, don't know why :( :( :( I won't judge until we get HQ though, maybe it will be good then I actually ended up liking her What's Up performance but I can't see myself ever coming around to this one. The screaming just doesn't fit with the rest of her performance of this song for me.
Cody Draco 2,531
All of the people acting like you have to like Gaga's cover of this song to like an entire genre called Rock are ridiculous and sound like snobs. :madge:

What you think is being said by the "snobs": If you don't like Gaga's cover of If I Ever Lose My Faith In You you can't like Rock music. What is actually being said by the "snobs": If you think screaming during a performance diminishes the quality of the performance you probably don't like Rock music. Hope that helps. :madge:

Screaming does not equate to good rock music/performances in my humble opinion. :madge:
