the vatican gets nowhere near enough attention or scrutiny, actually, and that's why it took so long for the institutional rape and cover up of abuse to come out. they have private finances of insane amounts of money. they give aid to countries on the condition that the money isn't spent on things like birth control leading to endless misery and suffering. the pope has the attention and veneration of millions of people who adore a man who is to them the vicar of christ on earth. 

 

i think expecting people to not say backwards things in 2014 should be ubiquitous. i think not paying attention to the words of such a figure of power and influence across the entire world is backwards. i think being casual about the words of the leader of the religion of 1.2 billion people is backwards.

 

you encourage and nurture indifference to cruelty and injustice and misery by not being outraged every single time people like him say hateful, ignorant and cruel crap. because what they say really does matter to people.

Hmm.. I see what you mean, but I think you turned those two sentences of mine into something I didn't refer to at all. We're not talking about institutional rape, abuse, birth control or any of the things you mentioned. I actually agree completely that the Vatican deserves attention for all the things you mentioned, but those have little to do with these specific statements of the pope, so I don't think you can attack me for that, you don't know how I feel about that.

"atheists" don't dedicate any time to people who don't give a damn about the bible. that's precisely what we want. couldn't you figure that out as you were typing that? well, i say we but atheist doesn't actually refer to anything but people who don't believe in god. and it's probably not fair of either of us to generalise them. but we both know what you're talking about so generalisations are okay here.

 

 also, dedicating your time to discussing or protesting something you're opposed to isn't really the same as dedicating your time to that thing. that's a weak point and you know it. that's like saying to an oncologist "for someone who hates cancer u sure spend a lot of time dealin w/ it!" uh yeah...
