Dunk96 2,526
It's simple: Gaga doesn't market herself to the same market she did in TF days. DWUW was the first time in a long time that she attempted to market herself to straight males and it kinda worked. TEOG was another hit with the GP because she wasn't preaching about gays or wearing meat dresses, or messing with religion. She was simply letting the music speak for itself. Other than that she specifically targets her image to the gay male crowd, that's what makes her "not cool."
Yves 1,891
I dislike ARTPOP. But I ain't embarassed to play her songs in public. I'm still her fan after all. Wow, DWUW was known by them after all. Mess at GUY #Justice4Gypsy
Jed 7,716
But that's what I'm saying. That's not how it is. That's how it seems right now because people didn't connect with ARTPOP. But that doesn't make listening to Gaga uncool, like any of her previous stuff. People will listen to her when they like the music. They didn't like ARTPOP. She's not "uncool," she's just not anything right now because she's not doing anything in the pop world. Which is fine because she's doing phenomenal with Tony and Cheek to Cheek. When she releases something that people connect with, they're going to listen to it and talk about it. When ARTPOP was out my friends (not huge investors in the pop industry) literally asked what she was doing lately. And I don't know what college you go to buy I have not heard any Gaga songs in the one and a half years I've been here. You would NEVER hear Do What U Want at a fraternity at my school. I got taunted for wearing my Lady ****ing Gaga shirt. Look, I know she's great and she's amazing and obviously that will never change. What has changed is how people look at her, and it's much different now than it was when all my friends were playing her music.
migamiga 12,101
Maybe on your campus but not at my school. I heard someone blasting Swine once in their car and that was it
JustPokeHerFace 2,564
Well yeah that's true I mean I go to a high school with a lot of conservative people and they still bopped to DWUW. I plan on going to a big SEC school next year, hopefully they're the same as your school.
craig 680
There are hardcore hipsters for whom only indie music is cool. There are macho guys for whom only guy's music like rap and rock is cool. Many in both camps will allow 1 or 2 pop stars who are big or innovative to be semi-cool for a short time, but that's it. In both groups, it's not that Britney or Madonna or Katy has (or had) it any better.
djBuffoon 12,115
To be honest, I have not met one person who listened to ARTPOP in full and did not like it. I'm sure they're out there, but my experience has been very different from others on this board. And I agree, the first two singles were very popular in the New York tri-state area, everyone knows them and I still hear them being played. Which leads me to believe that, if the album had reached more ears, the "GP" would have caught on. Which further leads me to believe that more people appreciate her music than they are perhaps willing to let on.

What has changed is how people look at her, and it's much different now than it was when all my friends were playing her music. Well, I don't know area you're from, but I'm sorry you got taunted. Regarding the bolded part, that just means they weren't aware of what was happening with her because she didn't have this huge lead single like she has with all of her past albums. People weren't talking about her like they did in the past. That doesn't mean she's not cool, she just didn't have enough exposure or success with her pre-album material like she did with past albums for people to really know about what she was doing. Like I said, she just wasn't really anything. She was just kind of hanging around the middle. I guess the people that you encountered did find her uncool, but my point in this thread is to say that that's not how it is with everyone. Especially with my experience. Just because there are people around you that think she's not cool doesn't mean that everyone thinks she's uncool, and I know that just because of my experience, that doesn't mean everyone likes her. But the whole point is to say that there's not this general consensus about Gaga that labels her as uncool like I think a lot of people her think. It'll vary depending on her artistry and music. I'm not meaning to start any arguments, I just wanted to point out that it's not a unanimous thing to hate Gaga.
RainingOnMe 7,280
I agree tbh, the only people who might be embarrassed to listen to her are insecure straight guys who think if they listen to her people might think they're gay. Or closeted gays who want to keep it a secret.
Guest
Also, I want to point out that I go to college in Alabama. Basically the most conservative, Republican place you can be besides Mississippi.
2007 5,291
True, she was completely the opposite (you would be uncool for hating her) she was that bold image to the GP, but its like she sacrificed that name when she released BTW, it made her look like she's sing for the freaks and losers

We all know they were tearing Gaga down all throughout the era. If there had been more positive media attention toward the album, it would've gotten a lot more exposure and would've reached more ears.
XoXoJoanneGaga 629
Do What U Want was the first cool Gaga song since like 2010. It's not really an issue, pop stars for the most part aren't "cool", it's just that Gaga at her peak was because she was something else. She lost the cool factor with Born This Way, even though it's a great album.

And Katy has had it a little easier this past era because she had two massive singles, so it seems like people just unanimously like her. That's not necessarily the case, it's just that she puts out music that people like and connect with, and she's not as daring and controversial as someone like Gaga or Madonna. DanMonster 185
If I said to most people in my school that I like Gaga, most would literally laugh in my face and tell me how basic and weird she is. Most people genuinely think she is not cool because of her weirdness. There are a lot of people that like her but the majority really does not want to be associated with her.
