jthorn 37
I think her point is how unfair it is to artists (especially those who can't make a truck load of money off of album sales)
TMP 87
only a hater would say this comes off as greedy. spotify doesn't pay enough money to their artists. my band will get one dollar and then some for 500+ plays on spotify.

Jed 7,716
You guys it's her own money, it's her own product. Back when you had to buy music that was just the way it was. If she wants to make the most she can then she should be able to do so without hearing a bunch of people criticizing her for it. Honestly, this kind of public smearing of spotify helps out artists who maybe aren't getting as much from the streaming service as they would from the purchase of albums, Who are you people to call her greedy? StrawberryBlond 14,872
Someone brought up something I hadn't realised until now - she won't be able to chart as well without Spotify. Blank Space is doing really well on UK iTunes right now but because the UK has now combined charting and Spotify streaming, if you don't have the streaming points, you drop a considerable number of places. This was one of the reasons why Taylor couldn't debut at #1 with Shake It Off here even though she stayed at the top for a while - her sales were high, but her streaming wasn't (but it did increase as the song grew). Now with zero streaming points as her music isn't on Spotify at all, means she could miss out on otherwise awesome chart positions. So, I'm sure in the long run, she and her team will realise this idea was a huge misstep. The whole thing really hasn't helped her reputation and has been the one fly in the ointment of an otherwise flawless marketing campaign. Its made her appear cold, distant and thinking she's better than other artists. The youth of today want constant access to music, especially if it's free and that is not an attitude that they support. To be anti-Spotify at a time when U2 have given away their entire new album for free to everyone with an iTunes account is not a good idea. Yeah, U2 are richer and got paid several million from Apple to do this deal, but the point is, "music, not the bling" is very on trend right now. To fly in the face of all that can only point to greed.
DrewStevens 5,249
Both, Spotify and Taylor, are here for the money, but not Taylor as a person, the brand Taylor Swift. All the business men behind her who earn most of the royalties of her music. They get more than 40% of the royalties and the rest goes to the artists and Spotify/iTunes. iTunes takes details same percentage of money but no one is going to take their music down of iTunes right? So this whole battle against Spotify is stupid. If you don't like it don't use it, but don't try to make them look like the villains just to cover your ambition. giskardsb 12,565
Taylor Swift and the Myth of the Mean Greedy Artist: http://electricliterature.com/taylor-swift-and-the-myth-of-the-mean-greedy-artist/ In short, treat artists like you would treat any other type of worker. If you wouldn’t demand your accountant do your taxes “for exposure,†steal medicine from your doctor to show him his rates are overpriced, or call your baker “a greedy asshole†for charging a dollar a dinner roll, then maybe go easy on an artist asking the cost of a few cups of coffee for something they put countless hours of work into.
