craig 680
I'd define someone as a major touring act is they are capable of doing a world tour that plays arenas and makes over $50 million dollars. If you can't do this, you can't claim to be a major current pop star, because touring is central to the music business now. The question is, how many can meet this definition? To keep it current, let's focus on acts with a $50 million US dollar in the past 7 years. My list is based on concert earnings data from Wikipedia. If it is incomplete or inaccurate, go ahead and set me straight. Current Big 5 All emerged as stars between 2007-2009, have a lot of recent hits, and are under 30. To my knowledge, the ONLY 5 females emerging since 2007 with the popularity to do a $50 million arena tour. Nobody else has been able to string enough success together to get that big. 1) Gaga - 181.1 mil - 98 dates - Born This Way Ball - 2012-13 - 227.4 mil - 201 dates - Monster Ball - 2009-11 (? projected 90 mil. - 79 dates - ArtRave - 2014) 2) Taylor Swift - 150.1 mil - 86 dates - Red Tour - 2013-14 - 123.1 mil - 110 dates - Speak Now - 2011-12 3) Rihanna - 141.9 mil - 96 dates - Diamonds Tour - 2013 - 90 mil - 98 dates - Loud Tour - 2011 - 40 mil - 65 dates - Last Girl on Earth - 2010-11 4) Katy - 59.5 mil - 127 dates - California Dreams - 2011-12 (? 100 mil from UK and N.America - 130 dates - Prismatic Tour - 2014-15) 5) Miley - 67 mil - 56 dates - Wonder World - 2009 - 54 mil - 70 dates - Best of Both Worlds 2007-08 (? - 78 dates - Bangerz 2014) 4 Millennial Stars These girls emerged to stardom in 1999-2000, during the turn of the century pop boom. With over a decade to accumulate hits and make fans, they should be at their touring peak even if their hit singles peak is past. 1) Beyonce - 229.7 mil - 132 dates - Mrs. Carter - 2013-14 - 119.5 mil - 108 dates - I Am Sasha Fierce - 2009-10 - 90 mil - 96 dates - Beyonce Experience - 2007 2) Pink - 184 mil - 142 dates - Truth About Love - 2013-14 - 47 mil - 34 dates - Funhourse Summer Carnival - 2010 - 149.3 mil - 151 dates - Funhouse Tour - 2009 3) Britney - 68.7 mil - 79 dates - Femme Fatale - 2011 - 135 mil - 97 dates - Circus Tour - 2009 4) JLo - 52.6 mil - 79 dates - Dance Again - 2012 4 Queens of International Success This group emerged from the early 80's to mid 90's, and contains 2 women with highest grossing tours and two who are much bigger worldwide than Americans would suspect. They've outlasted a lot of other acts that were big in the 80's and 90's. 1) Madonna - 305.1 mil - 88 dates - MDNA Tour - 2012 - 407.7 mil - 85 dates - Sticky & Sweet - 2008-09 - 194.7 mil - 60 dates - Confessions Tour - 2006 2) Celine - 280.2 mil - 132 dates - Taking Chances - 2008-09 3) Kylie - 60 mil - 77 dates - Aprodite Les Folies - 2011 - 96 mil - 80 dates - Kylie X2008 - 2008-09 - 40.1 mil - 34 dates - Homecoming - 2006-07 (? - 34 dates - Kiss Me Once - 2014-15) 4) Shakira - 53.2 mil - 107 dates - Sun Comes Out - 2010-11 - 100 mil - 116 dates - Oral Fixation - 2006-07 3 Amazing Seniors There are only 3 women who turned 60 before 2007 who are still doing $50 tours. They aren't the girls who dominated charts in 60s-70s like Dianna Ross and Olivia Newton-John, but they all had chart success well into their 40's and early 50's. 1) Cher - 97.4 mil - 192 dates - Cher at The Colosseum - 2008-11 - 260 mil - 325 dates - Farewell Tour - 2002-05 (? 55 mil for leg 1 - 79 dates - Dressed to Kill - 2014-15 2) Barbra Streisand - 66.3 mil - 20 dates - Barbra Live - 2012-13 - 119.5 mil - 29 dates - Streisand - 2006-07 3) Tina Turner - 132.5 mil - 90 dates - 50th Anniversary - 2008-09 4 Surprising Underachievers You'd expect more from these famous divas, but either their careers have fizzled in recent years or they haven't managed to mount major tours. Xtina - 48.2 mil - 81 dates - Back to Basics - 2006-07 (hasn't toured since, cancelled a tour after a flop album) Mariah ? - 40 dates - Adventures of Mimi - 2006 (hasn't toured more than 25 dates since) Adele ? - 51 dates - Adele Live - 2011 (didn't play arenas or make much per show) Nicki ? 44 dates - Pink Friday Tour - 2011 (didn't play arenas or make much per show)
Aaron 260
Nicki ? 44 dates - Pink Friday Tour - 2011 (didn't play arenas or make much per show) I've seen Nicki twice at my local arena and it was pretty full. Seats about 11k. First time she came some seats were curtained off but second time no. And she came twice in one year.

Based on Wikipedia, she opened for Britney in 2011, did the Pink Friday tour in 2012 which was mostly theatres and smaller venues, and then another tour with only 18 gigs which never came to America. Curunir 7,510
right now or in the future, i wouldn't consider miley, britney or jennifer lopez as major touring acts (even though they've earned more than 50M with a single tour). adele might have an enormously successful tour in the future and the other pop girls are probably going to continue being successful (rihanna, katy, beyonce...) Now looks like they very well might lose the bet. Adele might have the popularity for huge tours, but when you remember her vocal surgery, stage fright, and smoking, you wonder if she'll ever capitalize. In May with the Pink Friday Tour and in December with the Pink Friday Reloaded Tour. The Pink Friday Reloaded Tour boxscore: Which is weird cause it felt full and it wasn't curtained off. BEC has a lot more capacity than 5.8k. Weiiirddd.
