A grumpy, way too serious and stoic person? Education programmes are good. But some FUN are important, tooo! Well if only I like children, and adopt they will need not to worry. Rimes 5 Posted October 7, 2014 Share Posted October 7, 2014 When I was a kid in the late 1970s-early 1980s, cartoons were almost never shown after 5pm, except for the occasional 8pm Charlie Brown specials, etc. During the weekday, before school there would be old cartoons on the UHF channels, and then coming home from school there would be some around that time, too (3-4pm), again mostly on the UHF channels (not the network channels like CBS, ABC or NBC). This was even true with cable TV for most of the 1980s, where cartoons weren't aired in the evening. So, Saturday morning was exciting because there would be a big block of cartoons on the three networks from around 8am to noon. And they were usually all new shows, and were sometimes promoted with a network special (aired around 8pm) announcing the new fall line-up. The new season would also be advertised in comic books back then, so we'd know what new series to expect. It wasn't until the late 1980s when the cable channel TNT started up that I ever saw cartoons aired regularly in the evening. They had a block of old Bugs Bunny/Looney Tunes cartoons that aired around 6 to 8pm every day. The Cartoon Network launched in 1992. Now it was possible to watch cartoons at any time of day or night. Other channels also started airing them at all hours. Even today on free over-the-air TV (not cable) there is a channel called QUBO that airs kids' shows, including cartoons, 24 hours a day. So the specialness of the Saturday morning network (ABC, CBS, NBC) timeslot has been gone for the past 15 to 20 years. Gradually the networks had been phasing out their cartoon shows and other kids shows during Saturday mornings. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
