Tony Bennett: "I steered Lady Gaga toward quality"

Only this forum would accuse an 88 year old heteros-xual man of "shade".

He sounds like he's saying he helped her get her focus back onto quality and authenticity after people tried to use her during her last eras, and she appreciated that.

Don't take it the wrong way :later:

Thank you for this and I'm thankful for like-minded individuals.  :)  We all know now she was suffering from various issues pre-ARTPOP.

I interpret it as quality of life more than anything else.

I love pop music (Gaga's especially) and still agree with him. Compared to other genres I think it's ****.

I love Gaga and still don't care for pop music, so I don't see anything wrong with what he is saying.

I love Tony, but I'm tired of these interviews where he subtly shades her previous work. Gaga's previous albums were all amazing. She's a great composer + arranger (and now producer!) and there's a reason she's known for her hits. It's tiring to hear him say this constantly.

Tony's not personally shading her previous work -- he's re-stating what we all know the GP says and thinks. That pop music is garbage and Lady Gaga, being a pop artist, creates garbage music. When I say GP, I mean literally everybody. Not the 13-30 year old audience we usually refer to when we say GP and mean "non Gaga fans but still pop music fans (Top 40 radio listeners)."

As for Gaga not being difficult, I'm sure it's because she knows he's a legend and wouldn't dare be a diva with him. Kinda like how Kim listens to Kanye because she sees him as "above" her.

I don't think he was insinuating that pop music isn't quality music.  I think he meant that he was introducing her to old standards that, while different from what Gaga does, still has the same quality that her music does.  It's like looking at something different for a fresh perspective while having it still be on the same level as what she does.

He's an old man. He doesn't even know what shade is just stop guys :toofunny: he's never had bad intentions with the things he's said.

You don't deserve a point of view if the only thing you see is you.

she made quality songs before you Tony, didn't you hear even TEOG ? :fat:

but he's from another generation, let him think like that

He wasn't saying she lacked quality before. Hell, he collaborated with her in 2011.

He's saying he helped refocus her back onto the music and her voice, not the noise and drama that was plaguing her career from 2011-2013.

Don't attack someone who is clearly trying to be supportive of Gaga. It's rare for her to have people like him around in an unfriendly industry, should be a bit more grateful for his words.

That was slightly uncecessary but expected from him. And also, I'm tired of hearing Gaga saying "I started playing jazz when I was 13" and playing that card at every  opportunity she gets. Like damn, how many times does this fact have to be shoved in our faces by both of them. Sheesh.

Her pop albums outmatch Cheek to Cheek easily, the creativity and hard work put into those songs easily outstrip an album of covers. I'm tired of his comments acting as if pop is subpar, Gaga's pop songs were "quality" and in my opinion better than anything he's ever released.
