Tony Bennett: "I steered Lady Gaga toward quality"

Tony has a valid point. Otherwise would this many people been saying how much of a talented singer she is? He’s been in the business for several decades so if Gaga can take it, we can take it.

Pop music is great but it will never get the level of respect that jazz has had. I wouldn’t get so offended. If he wanted to work with her then he can’t think what she does is all that bad anyway!

He just knew she was so much more than a pop star. I said that from the beginning. Time to adjust and accept that pop music won't be Gaga's only focus anymore.

Also I don't think it has to do with him being old. I don't see anybody putting out DISCO records and scoring number ones. Like it or love it, disco was a fade...Jazz will never be. And hey I love pop music and definitely don't want to see Gaga stop doing it. I don't think she will. She will take a little part of this experience and make even better pop music and really blow everybody away.

He's 88. You guys must be brain dead or something, it's pretty obvious why he's saying that. :ghostney:

No it's not. Why would any artist with some respect to creativity would belittle an entire genre of music? If I were interested in jazz music I'm sure I could note many artist whose music isn't "quality," for me at least. If he doesn't give a broken hip about other genres than jazz then he should not speak up. Now he comes off as either close-minded or just as an arrogant.

Oh man, this thread's gonna get messy.

Let me just say that our perception of quality is probably much, much different to that of an 88 year old jazz legend. And he definitely encouraged her to be her best.

Agreed. He comes from a different time in music/pop culture.

Well I kinda agree with him.

Her music has quality but lately that's not her main goal. With ARTPOP she cared too much about her image and that overshadowed the quality of her music.

Is it really such a surprise that someone his age can't appreciate her previous :duck: I'm sure Gaga knew what he meant anyways :madge:

Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn

Why does he shade Gaga like that it's so strange

Because he is 88 and speaks his mind.  He means it all with love.

All he's saying is that he steered her from EDM pop to real, live music.

Well I kinda agree with him.

THIS.

He thinks her music is derivative. Let's not gloss it over. I get it. He's 88 and appreciates certain types of music. Moving on.

I appreciate his contributions dearly. I am eager to hear how she applies what she has learned to non "American Standards" as she prepares to possibly release new material in the near future.

Gaga will gain more respect for a singing style that has no support from technology. No one will be able to deny her abilities, other than judging her talent alone. I think Tony wants to showcase this more than people are implying that he was disregarding her past work. She proved to be a great pop star before risking her brand in other directions, now she'll risk to show the world why she's a great musician and singer.

I love both of these comments! Good points!

Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."
