Melech 9,900
Of course we can't know. it's just a feeling of freedom and privacy you get when you don't have the feeling that somebody is judging you all the time and that you need to have a purpose and a fate. You can be purposeless, make your own decisions and make your own life and live the best off it. When you don't have a religion, it's a BIG feeling of freedom you get. The Bible (for example) is FULL of scaring people, oppressing people and rules you have to follow. Why limit your whole life for something that probably doesn't exist anyways? You don't need to dedicate all of the things you do in your life to one thing 'just in case' that thing exists. If we'd did that with all irrational scenarios our human mind can think off, we wouldn't be able to do anything anymore and we'd be supposed to pray to every God we can imagine. Just FYI: There's just as much chance that the Bible is the 'truthful' religion as there is for the thousands of other religions. It's extremely unlikely that exactly your religion is the right one. If you're going to this hell you believe in anyways, why would you dedicate your life to it? Are you trying to convert me? mess
Rollercoaster 2
Yeah because people 2000 years ago looked so different No, the YOU what YOU are. What you think and feel, what you love and hate. It was born that time That did look different 2000 years ago. Humans were much shorter, but evolution over such a relatively short period of time, has made the average height of humans become taller. That's evolution. All men were created ... not equal, but short. From what I've seen, the soul is a combination of our collective DNA in our blood, the unique development of our minds, and the emergent properties that work together in our body to perform the essential operations for life to persist. I think all living creatures possess this feature. Ever hear people say, "follow your heart" along with following your mind? The heart is an organ that pumps oxygen carrying blood to every section of our body. It is the blood that carries our DNA, nutrients, our immune system, our ability to heal our skin and other areas when injured, muscle building proteins, the building blocks for every organ, bone, cell type, and eventually reproduced life so the process can start again in a new unique combination. I believe our brain, spine, and blood work together to put the intelligence in our life system, since we don't have to sit there and think about body operations that go on auto pilot for us. If DNA has the information to make these operations possible, perhaps it is also where we get our intuition and collective wisdom that supplements our intelligence. We may be finite beings, but our blood is like the fire of a torch we keep passing on. If we look at it in those terms, it has been around since we formed as a species as it developed from parent to child. Of course, these are my views and I don't expect others to see it that way. Also, I am aware that the brain carries out these life operations, but I also think the brain is a major extension of DNA as well. So it's imaginary? There is no soul, it's all of those other things you mentioned working together - hence the word 'system'. Regardless, abortion can't hurt the 'soul' if this is a 'soul'. We basically agree with this you look at it in a little bit more spiritual way, that blood is our source of life that creates our personality (which is kinda true, but I don't really think of it in that way). In the end, our personality is a part of the brain and heavily influenced by our DNA (genes), experiences, decisions, education and upbringing. The oxygen that travels through our blood is what keeps our brain and organs alive, so yeah, as long as we're alive, we're able to think (unless our brain is so severely damaged that we're uncapable of thinking). This supports the theory that there's no life after death and no 'soul' that can live on without our brain getting its oxygen and other things. Though our imagination has been very useful to mankind in the past, even in science, I was referring to our body's housing of what we interpret as a soul. The information carried in our DNA has been developing over time, coinciding with evolution. Our DNA will carry on through our children. Not sure where you came up with that when I explained it in terms I thought you would understand... I wasn't talking about abortion... I won't tell others how to live. Those decisions are out of my hands. I'm glad to be alive and I'm glad others survived the decision making process. Stand in the light, cast your shadow. Luc 4,776
Are you trying to convert me? mess Found a new weak 'argument' to cover the fact that you don't have any good argument? Of course I'm trying to change your (or somebody else's) opinion/stance on this. That's the whole point of discussing something. You're doing the same. Now answer to what I said in its whole. I agree when people die, they return to the elements in nature. However, I do think the soul carries on in the genes of our children, hence why I think people get this idea of reincarnation. If a child has the genetic makeup of their ancestors, they are in a sense, a reincarnated version of them. Well, my point is that people are simply seeing the same phenomenon, through different interpretation. Just as someone said that is how people explained things before we developed science, and basically gave the same phenomenon different and more specific terms in English, Latin, or Greek. Rollercoaster wants to call it a system, others see the same thing and see a soul. Why would this be problematic if we are trying to understand the same things? This is about what is there, not what people project or exaggerate. Stand in the light, cast your shadow.

You've explained all of these things that go into creating and maintaining a living body, most of it with flowery phrasing, you've not yet explained what a 'soul' is. There is no such thing, is what I can gather from your nonsense, but there are other things. Awesome. You basically are saying we have a nervous system, a circulatory system, and DNA is passed on from parent to child. Where's the soul? Is that the soul? Because religion says it's something very different. I agree when people die, they return to the elements in nature. I've tried to explain myself as considerate as possible. I have been explaining what the soul is, but you seem to discard these interpretations for the labels you found in a textbook. Are we not describing the same phenomenon? Science basically studied natural phenomenon and gave it numerous labels, a way for humans to understand physics and nature. People seeing it from a spiritual perspective, apart from exaggerations and projections, respect the same properties. If you want to call all those body functions, systems, feel free. However, life has a mind of its own and I think DNA is that mind and our soul. Stand in the light, cast your shadow.

They are just that. You're just saying what makes the body work. That's all. By pretending that it can also be called a 'soul', you're doing nothing to really stand up for what you believe - unless you believe you're in a constant state of conflict with your beliefs. If you're referring to the Christian God, it's stated in the Bible that Jesus will return so I would assume that would be before the Sun dies. It doesn't matter in the end. People like me will pass away soon enough. I get to find rest from my misery and conflict and you get one less person giving you nonsense in your eyes.
