Nemo 4,293
What do the numbers at the end (like "8" on ARTPOP) mean?
Miranda Sings 1,705
Welp, slay then, but I can't see how Beyoncé is lower than ARTPOP. It's all so subjective Because, as you said, it is subjective. His opinion was that ARTPOP was better than BEYONCE. Neither your opinion or his opinion is more credible. StrawberryBlond 14,881
Robert Christgau is an odd critic. He's given A ratings to albums that were viewed as overwhelmingly "meh" by every other critic and given his "choice cut scissors" rating (a bad album that has one good song on it) and his "bomb" rating (the worst album) to some critically acclaimed works. I'm not saying every critic should think alike (as an amateur critic, I disagree frequently with the professionals and think it's a good sign when my view does line up with theirs), but it's eyebrow raising when this one critic always seems to be on a radically different though process to the others. I sometimes wonder if, despite his legendary status, other professional critics view him as a bit of a black sheep. I don't agree with everything he says (he gave Roman Reloaded an A-, after all), I respect him for liking Gaga (he's given all her albums A ratings) and not conforming to the views he's meant to have. Lord knows that's a major thing about myself that so many people pick up on. Hey, maybe we've got more in common than I think. By the way, here was a segment on his view of the mixed critical reception ARTPOP got. He called it the most under-rated album of 2013. I just hope if Gaga goes more rock in the future that he still likes her as he isn't art-rock's biggest fan: I’ll go out b---hing about 2013′s most underrated album. In 2011, supercelebrity Lady Gaga got a B&NR column just like genius Tom Zé because I considered her equally substantial in her own way. Despite selling almost as much as its predecessor, her new ARTPOP is widely accounted a failure, in part because her social-media army got beat back by Katy Perry’s social-media army but also because critical reaction has been clueless. The album hasn’t just been berated by online rockcrit’s ever-shifting gaggle of dunderheads crying “insincerity†and claiming she’s boring because they’re bored, but misread by pros as pop-savvy as Jon Pareles, Maura Johnston, and Mikael Wood. Well rationalized or not, I deduced that the pans were more of the old what-have-you-done-for-me-lately once I realized that after spinning the album casually for a week I perked up every time “Aura†and “G.U.Y.†and “MANiCURE†and “Swine†came around again. Maybe it’s just my Skrillex problem-since unlike the young I’m never bombarded by EDM synths at medically inadvisable volumes, this was not only the rawk album of the year for me, it sounded fresh. Really, who needs guitars? I bought ARTPOP for my sister along with Festival au Desert. She likes it less, as indeed do I. But not by a lot. It takes all kinds. And we’re healthier as a culture when we agree on a bunch of them.
Anderson123 38,467
Welp, slay then, but I can't see how Beyoncé is lower than ARTPOP. It's all so subjective Exactly. Because it's HIS list. I also appreciate ARTPOP more than Beyoncé. And now that I think about it, do you know why BEYONCÉ is considered one of the best albums of 2013 ? Because that's what they want you to believe. They are so good at marketing that they've created this royal image of Beyoncé as a Queen or something like that, with all that fake drama. I agree that she is talented, but really, she is the most overrated popstar today (after Katy Perry). The album is good, but there are so many others that I think are way better than that. It's only seen as "Godly" because it's Beyoncé.
Miel 15,009
He's certainly an odd critic, particularly, as StrawberryBlonde said, his general against the tide views. Though, I've always been surprised by how much he's consistently liked Lady Gaga's albums. Christgau has always reminded me of Roger Ebert in this regard. A clearly well-read critic with an encyclopedic knowledge of the craft, was lukewarm towards some acclaimed albums, showed support for some underappreciated works, and never let the consensus sway his opinion.
