What have you learned from Tony?

LG: That it’s important to stay true to yourself. When I came into this with Tony, he didn’t say, “You’ve got to take off all the crazy outfits and just sing.†He said, “Be yourself.â€â€¦ You know, people wrote a lot of things about my last album, ARTPOP, which was very controversial. If it didn’t grab the whole world the way The Fame Monster did, that’s okay, because I know it’s good. That’s what Tony has taught me, that my intuition is right. When he talks about the 66 albums he’s put out, the peaks and valleys, and how it’s not about having a hit recordâ€â€it’s the most inspiring thing.

Did she just shade TFM? :awkney:

To the power in here that thought she implied that ARTPOP wasn't up to par. She said no such thing. Actually I think it's the opposite: she's calling the GP basic and saying that if they don't get it, it's because it's so good and her best work. That's what I got from it.

Well of course she will say that she needs to bring the Theatrics, also don't blame her if she does truly feel like that ARTPOP has gotten more bashful reviews than positive at least from where I've been reading em.

This interview resonates with me so much. Especially the bit where Gaga talks about how at no point in her life did she ever want to stop, but, she was at point where she didn't even want to sing anymore.

Over the past few years, I've been feeling similarly to Gaga. I'm an aspiring actor and did a fair amount of theatre in high school. One of my professors attended NYU and Emerson and the other, Ithaca. Both of them were very serious about theatre, as am I. But, my senior year, after the success of our production of "RENT" (in which I played Tom Collins, if anyone's familiar with the show), it kind of went to their heads, I guess. Over the summer, I was unable to be a part of a production of "Spring Awakening" they did with a local theatre. I was disappointed to have not been a part of it, but, I had other things lined up.

Anyway, so when I returned for the fall of my senior year, I was a part of the Theatre Ensemble, which is an honors level theatre course in which you're essentially required to be a part of every single production they mount that year. Seeing that "RENT" made them so much money (coming very close to selling out a 600 seat venue every night for 8 shows, which is especially impressive for a high school), they decided to do 6 productions my senior year. Being that I already struggle with depression and had a fantasy complex similar to Gaga's (meaning that I had trouble allowing myself to be vulnerable because I wanted to be a superstar), I knew that it would be a lot to handle, but, because of my love for theatre, I knew I'd be able to get through it.

Little did I know that they were pretty much going to work me into the ground, show me no respect and pretty much trap me in a mind**** where I had to put the show before all else. They created a space where the work lacked a love of the art itself and cared more about the notoriety for being known for putting on "good theatre". It was so emotionally taxing and I honestly felt like I was drowning. I seriously contemplated suicide several times over the course of that year (not due solely to them, but, also coupled with my depression and not being able to find theatre as a release from it, but, rather, an asset to it).

After I graduated and felt very fortunate to have made it out of their alive, I honestly didn't want to act or sing anymore. I had been told by an ENT that I have nodes (small calusses that build up on your vocal chords, not something you want to have as a singer) due to acid reflux, and that really added insult to injury.

It wasn't until I was able to take time for myself, truly evaluate what I want and heal that I've been able to get better and lead a life that is as a whole, honestly more enriching than the fantasy I was trying to live before.

And it comforts me to know that Gaga seems to be in a similar place.

A bit of a rant, I know, and there are probably parts that were a bit confusing, just because a lot of the psychological bits are kind of hard to explain, but, yeah.

Love this interview, love Gaga and love y'all.

Let’s just say 🗣️ I’m CREAMING 🥛 in my CORN 🌽

Amazing interview! I love the last quote about ARTPOP. I'm glad she didn't let the negativity around the era change how she felt about the music. :flutter:

She's not shading The Fame Monster at all. She's just saying that she realizes ARTPOP didn't resonate with the GP in the same way that The Fame Monster did. I think she just meant that just because people didn't relate to it the same way and embrace it, doesn't mean the album isn't good. She's not implying that it's too good/too deep/too whatever for people to understand, she's just defending herself by saying that she knows the album wasn't bad just because critics and other people didn't like it in the same way they liked The Fame Monster, and she's totally right.

I love that interview.

Such a beautiful, enlightening interview. If all you got from reading that is "that wig is tired" I don't know what to say to you...

Seriously.

Damn right.

Correct. Every time I listen to the album, I think for a second "this is what everyone thought was so disappointing?" But then I just tune it out and have a great experience.

Wow, she actually acknowledged ARTPOP not being quite up there with some of her previous work...I thought I would never hear her say something like that.

That's not what she said.

Yeah I always thought Gaga was a bit out-of-it when it comes to understanding her position in the industry (tweeting that GUY was #32 when it was ARTPOP :smh:) but this gives me hope that Gaga's still very aware and self conscious. She needs to stay in touch with reality to make her music relatable.

On the contrary, she said that she knows the album is good.

Loving the interviews she's giving recently. I'm very surprised that she actually thought of quitting, but the fact that Tony helped her out of that phase by forcing her to focus on her talent and passion can only mean fantastic things for the future.

Still, I'm a little bit confused how to put all she's saying on a timeline. We know they first started recording for this album in June 2013, so did all of that happen during her break after the Born This Way Ball or did Tony help and support her during the ARTPOP era? That's the only thing that's a little confusing for me.

I think that's important because of the statements about her personal life she made during the start of the ARTPOP era until her self-proclaimed breakdown and rebirth that should have occurred around January 1st.

LADY GAGA ON WHETHER SHE WANTS TO START A FAMILY

LG: I thought I did, because I was feeling kind of finished with all of the chaos of my life. But then I started to spend a lot more time with Tony, and everything just became simpler, more pure, and more perfect. Now I think I’m going to take a lot more time before I have kids and settle down. I just want to sing.
