Voltaire 4,531
I hardly ever post. But this one will make me: So many people act like this is some sort of horse race between female pop stars and whether or not someone has a hit single out right now is the determining factor in the world of music. That's missing the entire point. Gaga has trancended this "now" level and has been entering legendary status for a quite a while. Shes flying above all that mess. This doesn't mean every single needs to be number one (Katy proves that it really only means you have a hit single, not much more), and as a counter example= Madonna is considered one of the greatest of all time...do you realize how many of her songs/albums weren't instant hits? (Same goes for practically anyone including MJ) Gaga creates quality, she sets the bar in a variety of ways, the whole world still watches everything she does, nothing appears out of depseration, she is clearly going for the "long-career", she is working with legends that call her an equal (or at least a legend in the early stages of her overall career), and she's doing it all while remaining fascinating to every one from Anderson Cooper to my Grandparents and their friends. If you want to understand how hit singles don't always mean the whole story, read about Taylor Dayne: 18 top ten hits in the 80's (that she wrote) 1.5 of which have stayed in the zeitgeist, and is otherwise relatively forgotten. Legends of Showbiz is about the long game, and Gaga's playing some damn good hands. Candy is dandy but liquor is quicker

Legends of Showbiz is about the long game, and Gaga's playing some damn good hands. Best post I've read all day. It does seem like Gaga could care less how many of her songs hit number one, or what have you, and that is refreshing. She said something in a webcast interview in 2011 that sold me on the fact that she is in a different mindset than her peers. She said, paraphrasing, "I have yet to achieve that truly original moment. But I am constantly in pursuit of it." That is how an artist speaks, not a pop star.
