Electric Venus 484
the era flopped as a whole, not just the album.
South Blonde 6,150
No, it just underperformed Don't you think maybe they are the same thing? Love and attention?
DriverMonster 10
It started good with Applause but everything went downhill. I hated this era. Yes, hated. I think the era flopped big time, and I'm not talking about sales only. There was nothing organised with this era whatsoever. The vision and concept got lost in translation and the performances were few and really just okay. Only three singles and two videos. The album might sold okay but everything else from this era was a dissapointment.
Arturo 40,746
Applause was a hit. DWUW was a hit. G.U.Y was a complete bomb. The album sold moderately well and was still the 9th best selling album of 2013. The tour is selling well (minus the 4 cities she played in Australia) So overall, no it was not a flop. The numbers don't point to a flop. MDNA and ARTPOP's success are very similar. So there you go. Um ARTPOP sold more albums and singles than MDNA so

Didymus 34,379
Um ARTPOP sold more albums and singles than MDNA so Not that much, though. I don't know, I see a lot of similarities. Both had an obliterating amount of pre-orders, had good openings (MDNA had a lot more #1's though) and then fell into oblivion with only the first single being effective. Emvee 8,358
Not that much, though. I don't know, I see a lot of similarities. MDNA was released in early 2012. ARTPOP was released in late 2013. Album sales decreased dramatically within that time span because of the increase in streaming. But, yes, ARTPOP failed creatively. Gaga knows this most of all. But we know this because we scrutinize every little detail of a Gaga album. At least she tried to make it unique. ARTPOP will go down as the album as the album that tried to make a statement about art, pop, the artist, and the audience. What exactly was the creative intent of MDNA? It's just another Madonna album. Britney Jean was just another Britney album. There's no creative intent here except to put out another album. Well MDNA opened with 359,000 in the US (185,000 coming from the ticket bundle) and went on to sell ~540,000 in the US ARTPOP opened with 258,000 and went on to sell 730,000 in the US. Considering the way album sales have been declining dramatically, I just don't see a similarity. I definitely wouldn't consider "DWUW" as not being effective when you look at the numbers. Pop 4,541
I don't think it flopped commercially, nor do I care. Do I think she could've had 2 more hit singles if she tried harder? Yes, easily with DWUW and Gypsy. However, for me - the era "flopped" creatively, not commercially. It had amazing moments that I will cherish forever, but some moments were just cringe-worthy or never actually blossomed at all. So, all in all. I had fun, it was a cute era - but it could have been so much more. The Taylor Brigade: KNOCKOUT

Luc 4,775
MDNA and ARTPOP's success are very similar. So there you go. Not really. They can't be compared that easily. Albums generally sold better in 2012, and MDNA was released in a different season, so they can't be compared like that. MDNA had a 3x more successful tour, while ARTPOPs singles did a lot better.
