The attacker would have caught her off-guard, so her gun would have been in her purse or backpack, etc. They would have still killed her. If all it took was owning a gun to stop violence, we wouldn't have the murder rate we currently have on the south side of Chicago. Do you not think those people own guns? Most of the time, you can't stop crazy! The best you can do is TRY to avoid it completely, by doing things to keep yourself in safer situations.
