LilVenusian 579
Their friendship is obviously being played up for promo. Unless they are of relations a 28 year old and an 88 year old realistically have nothing in common. I imagine gaga only looks at him as a sweet, older, mentor type figure that she looks to for wisdom (more than an actual friend who is on your level, life experience wise). And tbh, the gaga curse is strong, last time she befriended an aging musician they ended up dying a few months later. If I were Tony I would cut off all ties immediately... PinkBalloons 0
Doesn't seem too authentic to me. Lady Gaga is on record for saying how she dislikes old people... And it was Gaga's dad who suggested Tony and Gaga collaborated. :D I don't see Gaga hanging around with Tony outside of the album and tour. My thoughts :D
Andy McQueen 4,484
Yes, it's a real thing. Doesn't seem too authentic to me. Lady Gaga is on record for saying how she dislikes old people... And it was Gaga's dad who suggested Tony and Gaga collaborated. :D I don't see Gaga hanging around with Tony outside of the album and tour. My thoughts :D She never ever said she dislikes old people, we will all get old. And she did hang around with Tony before album etc. many times. VforVendetta 2,024
Oh come on. She's 28 and he's almost 90. It's a valid question.This. I don't think that they are friends like people of the same age. They have a different relationship. I think that Tony admires Gaga and wants to see her succeed and become a legend. Free My Mind 2,209
I think she has a real connection with him. They clearly bonded after Lady Is A Tramp... out of all the people on that duets album, Gaga was the one that he went on to perform more with and do an album with! Ray of Light 8,134
I've always smelled something fishy. Tony's Gaga is Elvis comments came off as forced the 5th time he said it, and Gaga's recent "he's my soulmate rescuing me from pop music I'm the happiest now" behavior is odd too. Seems like a two way street for promo & acclaim. I don't know though. I'm just an a--lytical b---h.
Miel 15,009
I'm sure they're close like a grandparent and grandchild are. There's a limit to how much you can relate to someone with such a big age gap, but friendship tends to translate better than romance in these situations, I find. Gaga loves jazz and clearly has a working knowledge of it, so they must bond over that, as well as relating to things like being Italian-American, being from New York, singing from an early age and a heavy interest in the arts. Gaga doesn't make a habit of using other artists to get hits (she once said that she limits collabs because she thinks it's important as a soloist to stand on your own two feet the majority of the time), so I doubt she's doing it now. But there are some grey areas, of course. 1. Gaga's sales have been flagging lately...doing a collab album with a respected artist will gurantee sales and Tony got his first US #1 with Duets II and the album sold 1 million in the US alone. 2. Gaga's not been getting as much praise from the critics recently...a jazz covers album showcasing her acclaimed voice with a jazz legend will gain critical acclaim. 3. Gaga's Grammy awards have dried up: none for BTW and not even a nomination for ARTPOP...old-school jazz standards albums will be eaten up by the traditionals at the academy and Tony won two awards for Duets II in 2012. He's also won 17 Grammys in his lifetime. He's won Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album 11 times. Add this to the fact that they're already planning a sequel, and you start to think things are getting a bit contrived. But I think it's because the whole thing is business orientated too. No doubt Interscope are loving the prospect of sales, praise and awards this is going to bring and how it will be a huge milestone in Gaga's legacy, so I'm sure they're encouraging this friendship for all that it's worth. Good way to put it, I guess. Whether or not their relationship is genuine (which I do think it is, just in a manner different than we'd usually expect), I feel like it'd be played up either way by business for promo. 3 points in and ready for more
