1) The breakdown on Swine was shortened about 5 seconds. That's all. :huh:

4) The "breakdown" on J&D is the exact same instrumental that plays during Twista's verse during the studio version.

Agreed. ARTPOP sounds no more or less soulful than her other works, but I suppose that depends on what songs you're referring to. "Heavy Metal Lover" doesn't sound "soulful" because it's not meant to. "Marry the Night" does. "Venus" doesn't sound "soulful" because it's not meant to. "Dope" does.

But anyway, as truly wonderful and revelatory as Swinefest was, it was a mistake to do it before the album was released. If Gaga had premiered most of TFM or Born This Way before the official release, I have zero doubt that fans would have been disappointed in the album versions. There is no question about it. Her live versions always feature more instrumentation and flourishes, without exception.

she performed quite a bit of BTW before it came out.

But I agree. the "promo" singles and the snippets honestly ruined ARTPOP. If there hadn't been those stupid promo singles, Lord knows this era would've fared better.

Not the G.U.Y. snippet ah ah! When I heard that snippet, it kinda sounded like a filler song. But then when I heard the full song, I was like...

The album is just not as good as her previous one.

 

There are some gems (ARTPOP, Gypsy, Dope, Aura, Swine), but the rest of it is quite generic and soulless.

How I feel about it is Swinefest honestly shouldn't have happened. She shouldn't have ruined the album by playing 8/15 tracks from the album,plus the five snippets we heard of songs before the album's release. That's what killed ARTPOP's reception and its sales. She should've gone the route of her first three albums and not released any songs or perform any songs prior to the album's release date.

I agree that it's bad to release so much material before the album release, but she did the same with BTW.

Prior to BTW, she released/performed:

1. Born This Way

2. Judas

3. Hair

4. Edge of Glory

5. You And I

6. Americano

7. Electric Chapel

8. Marry The Night

9. Fashion of His Love

10. Scheisse

11. Government Hooker

I feel like Swinefest is the reason why many people say ARTPOP is "soul less" or why many felt underwhelmed by the studio album. What I mean by this is that if Swinefest had never happened, people would have nothing to compare the album to, and they would have not felt as dissapointed. Many here use the argument that ARTPOP was watered down compared to what Gaga performed at Swinefest. But if you think about it, nearly all Gaga songs from all of her albums have less instrumentation on their studio versions compared to when she performs the songs live. If Gaga had performed a "Swinefest" for all her previous albums, I am sure many here would also have felt underwhelmed by those albums. Finally, I think it all comes down to music preference. The people that felt most disappointed by the album version of the songs, probably prefer live or non electronic instrumentation.

 

I agree..somewhat. ARTPOP already feels relatively soulless to me, but expecting songs like ARTPOP and I Wanna Be With You to be in the album in the same soulful way they were performed was a huge let-down to me. Also the hype died off for me after hearing songs like MANiCURE and Swine. Instead of being able to take the album in all at once like with BTW, I got handed a platter of things I liked and didn't like and those I liked were removed for the album. Plus, ARTPOP is supposed to be a big concept album that you should listen to from start to finish. That kinda got ruined, too.

 

Not blaming GaGa or anything but it did make me receive the album in a bad way once it was released. Then later we hear she recorded it while in pain from her hip and it's like...ahhokay..next album.

 

Edit: Actually by soulful I mean... it's hard to explain. In Heavy Metal Lover the song is supposed to sound monotonous and it's amazing. But in songs like Donatella, Mary Jane Holland, etc. she's just screaming lyrics and I don't feel it at all.

Then there were still like six more songs that were unheard until the album was released,unlike ARTPOP being fifteen songs and two songs had been unheard. That's kind of what ruined it once Gaga confirmed how many songs were on the album. But regardless,I still love the album.

I think it was a mistake to debut songs that sound more or less the same on the album. I thought we were going to hear b sides/unreleased songs that didn't make the final cut, I was surprised when J&D actually made it on the album.

Her use of electronic sounds was neither modern or futuristic, nor did it preserve any of the old styles presented in the original Swinefest versions. Where the influence breathed in the live renditions, it was stifled in the studio.

With music, I like some live versions better, I like some studio versions better. I judge objectively where the influence of the so comes from and how it is represented in the song. To me, Sexxx Dreams was a gem in the Swinefest/Rehearsal version. In the studio version, it is nothing.

That is because not of the genres were meant to be preserved. It final result was supposed to be something unique.

It doesn't have to be that extreme, it just never seems like there's any middle ground - always the negative.
