Applause at the VMAs: Original Concept vs. Final Concept

It would have fit Applause perfectly. The song is about how it was torture for her to be away from the stage and applause when her hip broke. The song itself is upbeat, but the juxtaposition of this fun dance song with the slowly moving torture set would have captured the feeling of being bedridden with a broken hip: she wanted so badly to be out finishing her exciting, massive world tour, but she was bloodied up and stuck in bed.

Also, if this performance was actually carried out, all the idiots wouldn't have been asking "where's the art?" for the entire album cycle (and especially when the album was released). The original point of ARTPOP was to put high art into pop music performances. She got the pop music part covered with the songs on the album, but no one seemed to let her do what she wanted with the performance art aspect. It would've sucked to be Gaga this past year, tbh

I can't see the original really working with Applause, it doesn't fit the song tremendously and I think it would have came across a little try hardy? The concept sounds great and could have been better than what we got, I just can't see it working with Applause!

The dark visuals would have been beautiful with the Swinefest version (original?) of Sexxx Dreams or Aura, both were supposedly the lead single at different points?

Yep! Both rumored to be the lead at some point!

FUN FACT: The turning 'head' didn't work hours before the VMAs and they had to change ALL the performances.

Im glad they changed the concept for Applause days before the vmas, can you imagine Gaga and the haus having meltdowns because of the turning stage 2 hours before the show?

I think Gaga was the one who wanted Aura as the lead, but Jimmy Iovine was going between Sexxx Dreams and Applause.

The main stage for 2013 Vmas was like a circular rotating platform, one side was the stage and the other side was the 'head' of the special moonman. The stage was suppose to rotate, 'open' and reveal the sets of the artists during the big performances and 'close' to prepare the set for the next performer.

That's why Gaga started the show in that place, she sings that part with the white outfit, walks trough the stage at the same time the camera shows the 'head' rotating, the white garden appears and Applause stars playing.

That was the plan but the platform didn't work well during the last rehearsal and the producers/director didn't wanted to take the risk of the rotating stage during the live show and that's why all the performances had little changes hours before the vmas.

Wow, that's a lot, sorry about my english if you don't understood some parts.

It's hard to compare considering that we've only seen the original performance on paper and never will see it in full fruition. I don't think it's fair to denounce the the final performance for something that doesn't even exist. I do think it's a shame that MTV didn't allow her original ideas to be performed as I think it would've been brilliant, but I do really enjoy the performance of Applause we got.

I wish she did the tinker bell performance. It would be amazing and everything would fit. It was a pity to be just a rumour

I felt like what she did in the final one was a concept that was done too soon. Gaga is a artist who is forever evolving. I guess it's kinda like when artists release greatest albums after only 2 albums . It would be more epic if it was a medley of all eras done five, or ten years from now. Therefore, I would have preferred the original concept. Nevertheless, the VMA performance gave me life and then slayed me after. If only MTV weren't so biased all the time...

if she performed applause as is, then it definitely fits the final "lighter" concept. but if she were to have redone the instrumental for the performance and made it dark and theatrical then i would've loved the original concept.
