Kanye IS really smart and he IS really talented. People who bash his skills and abilities are usually people who have only heard his singles and cherry-pick the arrogant things he says. His albums are brilliant. 

 

That being said, he's also got an ego big enough to drown out a lot of what makes him so great as an artist. However, often if you strip his words down to what he means and not simply how he says them, you'll find that he's actually making a very good point. 

 

But I think that's part of the celebrity side of things. He knows putting on a show will get people talking about him. Say something over the top in an interview and all of a sudden people are interested in the interview.
