What's really scary is the disease in the film was based off of an actual outbreak. It's crazy how diseases can jump species like that (bat to pig to human in the film). From the World Health Organization: Ebola virus was isolated from semen 61 days after onset of illness in a man who was infected in a laboratory. The incubation period, that is, the time interval from infection with the virus to onset of symptoms, is 2 to 21 days. Incubation period can last a very long time. If you returned from, say, Africa three weeks ago and you started to get flu like symptoms would you immediately rush to the ER because you could've picked something up in Africa? Probably not. Most people just chalk it up to allergies, a little cold, etc. However, by that time the person has gone to work, met with friends, used public restrooms, etc. Thank GOD this stuff isn't airborne yet. Fatality rate... less than 0.02%. Ebola: Fatality rate... 50% - 90%. There is some cause for fear. It's better to be a little paranoid as opposed to blissfully ignorant. Oh I know that it's a lot more serious in this case. But the media definitely feeds off of this. As long as people are being kept in check in the country, this shouldn't be a big deal. As long as people are being kept in check in the country, this shouldn't be a big deal. If not though, a few years down the road we can be in chaos. And then you have people who make panic websites (THE TRUTH ABOUT EBOLA and whatnot) who put ads on their websites/advertise unapproved/untested substances that are "proven" to lessen the chances of contracting ebola. A-symptomatic or otherwise? I think that would cause mass panic. Imagine keeping business people, families, etc. locked in another country for three weeks (given that's how long it can take before symptoms show... I'm not sure how long before you can test for it).
