It has a 50%-90% fatality rate. I feel like we are still in danger. Apparently, they used experimantal treatment in Atlanta this week and are reporting good results so far. They can't use it in Africa for ethical reasons though. The two patients understood the situation but the general population of Africa that is infected doesn't - they already think the virus is fake and that it's government propaganda, so any further medical treatment might be met with similar outrage. I was in Ethnographic Film Class and we learned that people in South Africa/surrounding countries think that HIV/AIDS is spread via witch doctors. In fact, some see HIV/AIDS as a great medal of honor because it means they have had lots of unprotected s-x with women. I was in Ethnographic Film Class and we learned that people in South Africa/surrounding countries think that HIV/AIDS is spread via witch doctors. In fact, some see HIV/AIDS as a great medal of honor because it means they have had lots of unprotected s-x with women. Even others believe that is can be transmitted through nons-xual contact (excluding needles and such). It's scary really - ignorance is the main reason this outbreak has become largeer scale than past ones - not to mention that their main food source is responible for most of the infections. They have been eating bushmeat for centuries and now they have to be told stop it's dangerous - of course they won't believe it. There is little to no sanitation there and equally bad medical care. When there is no cure, it also means there are other unknowns about the virus. Hospitals are one of the worst places to keep contagious people and that has been proven by other outbreaks like SARS in Canada. The sanitation here is miles better than in Africa, so things like ebola don't spread nearly as easily. This isn't as big of a concern as the people in this thread is making it out to be. So they don't die. They don't have the ability to treat ebola correctly in Africa, that's why it's such a problem. Think of it this way: if it were you or a family member who had it, wouldn't you want them to have the best care possible? The patient is in a quarantined environment. He isn't wandering the streets of New York Tbh I mean Ebola is quite easy to contain for the simple fact that it isnt easy to spread. Its not like the flu The only reason it spreads so easily in Africa is because of very poor sanitation. Just about any desiese that can spread, will spread in Africa But in the developed world i dont see how u could get an epidemic like Sars or H1N1 from Ebola. That is what I was thinking - we may just not know everything about this virus and a deadly enemy we can't see is the scariest of all enemies. I agree that the medical staff is doing everything they can and it's contained properly and being treated by one of the best health care systems in the world. However, contained properly is the important phrase - I really don't think they should let anyone from that part of the world on any plane to any country. If it can take up to two weeks for symptoms to arise, much damage can already be done at that point.
