JustPokeHerFace 2,564
I see the similarities with the commercial performance and reception. I think they would have been a lot more comparable if the DWUW video would have been released though. We already saw the backlash she got from a 30 second clip, imagine if she released the whole damn thing.
Bebe 17,094
I don't think people are comparing the content and themes of Erotica to the content and themes of ARTPOP People are completely missing the point
Jjang 2,262
ARTPOP is fun and all, but its relative backlash is nothing compared to the Sex/Erotica era. Madonna was pushing the boundaries of s-xuality and gender and power at a deeply reactionary moment in American culture, which meant that it was bound to be evaluated better in the long run once the hysteria was over. ARTPOP, on the other hand...

We already saw the backlash she got from a 30 second clip, imagine if she released the whole damn thing. Um, Madonna was in control of the entire production and depicted herself in a dominant, s-x-positive poses throughout the book and album. That's part of why the conservative right freaked out so much - it was really threatening to the male s-xist status-quo. DWUW, on the other hand, was made with people who have been accused of s-xual assault and could appear to be satirizing rape. :trootea:
Mills 446
The OP is basically talking about the cycle of fame, wherein naturally the comparison is being made. Nowhere did it compare the two based on its content or theme. So please drop that off-topic discussion which is borderline flamebait.

Vevar 0
TBH I've always seen ARTPOP as comparable to Madonna's Bedtime Stories Era. Both albums came after albums that were really successful commercially while garnering massive controversy (I'd say more Madonna than Gaga) ... still these albums were widely spoken of (mostly negative ways) for the ideas and boundaries they pushed..... Bedtime Stories wasn't as warmly received as Madonna's previous efforts but wasn't a flop.... similar to ARTPOP which did moderately well but did no where as well as her previous efforts.... I remember a good friend of mine (massive Madonna fan) telling me that some people were saying that ARTPOP was going to be Gaga's Ray of LIght... and i disagreed and told him that I see ARTPOP turning out much like Bedtime Stories did for Madonna... hopefully then Ray of Light is coming next ;) lol ... just my opinion
hookerfreak 30
I think the difference between Erotica & ARTPOP is that Erotica was still shocking and on everyone's lips, while ARTPOP hasn't really made a shocking impact, more like it hasn't made an impact at all... I wasn't around when Erotica came out though, that's just what I've read
PopBitch 1,218
I've posted these two clips before from the Erotica period when she was touring it and the backlash over her album and career was being discussed as she arrived in NY for theNorth American part of her tour.Is Madonna's Career Over?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFq6UovHb_UMadonna's response to the backlash from mainstream media while in NY on a three-night sold out performance at Madison Square Gardenhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNA2DYnKepU

LittleBoot 27
I grew up with Madonna, was around during the "Erotica" era, and I can't say I agree with the guy's post. I don't think it's a very apt comparison. Madonna had already been around for almost 10 years by then. As I remember it, Madonna did get heavily criticized, but it was a much bigger deal back then. People weren't just critical of her, they were absolutely furious with her. She did seem to be on the wane, but she still had a number of radio hits, they were just more modest by her standards. Gaga is being called a flop, but it's not like people are all that angry at her except for mean spirited people that engage in stan wars. Not like they were with Madonna. I'm not saying "Gaga's over" in the slightest, but in my opinion, the two scenarios don't compare at all.
