Do You Really Think Gaga is the Best Lyricist in Pop Music?

Gaga's a risk-taker in all aspects of her music, lyrics included. When she gets it right, she really hits it out of the park. But when she misses, it sometimes ends up as cringe worthy.

Why do you all think that for lyrics to be good they have to tell you directly what they feel? :awkney:

That's why metaphors exist, and Gaga's pretty good in using metaphors (Judas, MJH, SHICD, etc)

She may not be the best, but she's pretty damn near :worship:

I very much agree with this.

Weird one-liners can be awesome a-la "I wanna take a ride on your discostick" and "Dirty pony, I can't wait to hose you down."

But then we have cringefest songs full of ear condoms and garden panties

In the end, I love and learn to appreciate all of Gaga's songs, but she is not THE best. There's no one artist that can be considered THE best.

I totally agree with you and VISION

Some of her clauses are strikes of absolute GENIUS :legend: Then others come out really weird and comical :rip: I end up falling in love with the comical ones though like the "ear condom" and "garden panty" eventually though - especially "skeleton guns are wedding bells in the attic"  :toofunny:

yeah

Gaga has some lyrics that sound like she just threw anything there and I get that it's pop but "I wanna be the Girl, Under You (Oh Yeah) I wanna be your G.U.Y. (...) I wanna be that G.U.Y. I wanna be that G.U.Y. I wanna be that G.U.Y. I wanna be that G.U.Y. Girl Under You GUY" and the unreleased "I can maek u sum food" the whole Sometimes song

and Lana oh dear Lana :smh: she reuses A LOT of phrases, specially in Born To Die "pale moonlight" "red dress" "beauty queen" are just a few examples :giggle: she improved a lot with Ultraviolence though. Her unreleased is even worse but I assume it's because they're outtakes most of the time :ohwell:

The bolded line sets up the entire song's message though....

But that aside, it is Pop Music. Theres the answer. Gaga knows how to create a middle ground between creating a hook (which is important in Pop music) and sending a message. I find her verses + bridge (esp. bridge) + the title line of the chorus are the bulk of message of basically all songs Gaga has written.

And Lana reuses a LOT of phrases, but i actually like it, lol.It feels like little nods to other songs rather than running out of ideas. It reminds me of music in musicals, how there are reprises (the best things ever ) and sometimes instrumental cue's that reference songs earlier, whether it be a small musical motif passage or something. Its kinda beautiful to me. I'm sure she could come up with other phrases if she cared :laughga: Lana has said many times b4 that she really writes for herself, so its possible she doesnt care "that" much.

I think Beauty Queen, Red Dress, Pale Moonlight and things like that MIGHT be phrases that just mean a lot to her personally. Maybe an old lover said them to her and they always stuck or something. Or maybe she just loves their historical meaning or emotional context that they create.

yeah but I think Gags could make a good chorus without repeating the same line 4 times and then changing it a little  if the last chorus had been the original chorus I'd have liked it more tbh :cryga:

and omg YAS I LOVE motifs and lil cues specially in soundtracks and scores

and I hadn't thought about it, maybe they do mean a lot to her

All of JnD :wtf:

I honestly dont know what JnD is about to this day

Mess @ her saying its really about Pancakes in that one track by track :lmao:

Off topic, but i find Venus's lyrics great. The verses + bridge are just abstract and remind me of ART thats kinda out there.

+ Their connection to the Visual and Thematic message of ARTPOP in general is beautiful.

In the current pop game, yes, I'd say she's the best.

But to me, one of the greatests is Goldfrapp - the lyrics are pure poetry.

No, Eminem is the best lyricist in pop music.

Gaga is definitely up there though.

I've always seen her visuals as her strongest selling point (followed by her vocals), not her lyrics. It's arguably even among her weakest, compared to all the things she does with her music. So, is she the best lyricist in pop music today (or ever; female and/or in general)? I believe not. One of the best? I've to say no, too. There are just far many Mainstream Top 40 singer-songwriters (and even pure lyricists) out there, of yesteryears or today, whose lyrics are either more thought-provoking or crystal clear in expressing their emotions.

Wet Fire

May be not the absolutely best lyricist. But she is one of the very bests in pop lyrics.

No. I think she can be really good and she can also be pretty lame. It just depends. Shes kind of inconsistent.
