They made extremely popular music and were hugely talked about persona's, but their music was also known as 'different' and was acclaimed heavily, moreso than their peers. They kinda had the best of both worlds. Gaga's first 3 albums were nominated for AOTY and so were Kanye's. They seemed to have the whole game on lockdown, when it came to controversies, hits, acclaim, articles, fashion statements, etc.. Than around Kanye's 4th album, 808s and Heartbreak, he started leaving his pop star persona for a more 'art' esque type thing "I wanna make popular music, but I want less fans," West tells Vibe magazine in its February issue. "I want the freedom of having less fans. It's like the freedom of having less money. If you have less money, you have less responsibility." He became even more polarizing than he was before dropping albums like 808s, MBDTF and Yeezus, which were way more experimental than anything he did before and he stopped giving a **** what people had to say about him in interviews, he just devoted himself completely to his art. The reason I'm making this thread is because I truly see such a similarity to Gaga's career ark, they seem to be the same person at their core to me just different personality traits (Kanye is way more aggresive) - and that people who feel like Gaga will go back to being a 'normal' popstar again are completely off base. The way she is now, I think she'll continue to go further into being more of an 'artist' than a pop star, even if it results in having less fans. "I don't care about going number 1 anymore, that's not what's important. I care more about people's music sounding like mine in 5-10 years. Or having their single covers look like mine in 5-10 years. The idea that Gaga's work is as acclaimed and talked about as Kanye's is laughable. musically yes kanye's albums are way more acclaimed but i guess gaga makes up for it with her personality, being a hero to gay ppl, and everything, it balances out (even though music is most important, in celeb culture both parts are important, Kanye is looked at as an asshole to a lot of the world which hurts him even though his music is great) I just feel like she's going to do deeper with this. Like when Kanye dropped 808s, it was sooo divided, the general consensus was that it was bad for a long time till people saw it's impact with Drake and Cudi, etc..
