Houdini 103
the delusion MJ says hello we are talking about pop female singers. madonna was the first big star to make female singer wear what they want, look like what they want and to be like their male alter ego. you're delusional if you don't consider Madonna's works as the first real advancement for female artists. Houdini 103
Donna Summer, Cher, Diana Ross say hello. I feel like you're giving Madonna TOO much credit donna summer, cher, diana ross were local artist. they never reached half of what madonna reached. people in america, europe were dressing like Madonna on a casual base. Madonna filled up 2-3 stadiums in a row only 2 years after her debut. Madonna's impact in modern music is the strongest for a woman and she was by far the biggest female phenomena in history. you're giving NOT ENOUGH credit there's even an article on wikipedia about it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madonna_wannabe

Madonna's impact in modern music is the strongest for a woman and she was by far the biggest female phenomena in history. you're giving NOT ENOUGH credit agreed but my disagreement was with you saying the first real advancement for female artists because that is a completely false statement. Madonna worked off of what these women did, and she went above and beyond. Donna Summer was not local, not if my mother, a teenager in the streets of Patiala, Punjab, India was dressing up like her spinning the records of Bad Girls, Hot Stuff, and Love to Love You Baby. Diana Ross was an international superstar capable of topping the charts across the world, she was named Billboard's female artist of the century for the 20th century, and in 1993, she was named the most successful female music artist of the century by Guiness for most records sold. Madonna's first tour The Virgin Tour was nowhere near as successful as Diana Ross's the Wiz tours and Supreme Tours. Yes Madonna became huge later on, but your point that Madonna was really the first doesn't add up. And your assertion that these women were local artists is false, plain and simple. donna summer, cher, diana ross were local artist. they never reached half of what madonna reached. people in america, europe were dressing like Madonna on a casual base. I said she was the first to put it mainstream and with fierce. The artist you named did nothing to help the advancement of feminist. So why modern pop stars all cited Madonna as their icon ? Because she truly put the female artist as the same level of men's one. she was the first real phenomena across the world. Diana Ross selling out 3 stadiums in London, 2 in Paris, 8 in Tokyo, 2 in Sweden etc ? Madonna did with her second tour, only 4 years after her debut. Madonna was as huge as rock bands back then. People became literally crazy when she was in town. Diana Ross, Donna Summer, Cher, etc. never been close to Madonna's success and legacy towards live music. She was literally the female Jackson on this side. Madonna was just pressed because she was/is irrelevant biggest tour of the year, #1 album in 32 countries, a top ten hits and the most watching music event on TV say hello
djBuffoon 12,123
The more time that passes, the more emphatically the work will enable to stand on its own. But how charming that a woman that I don't even consider to be remarkably talented could even overshadow such a tremendous album.

That's simply not true. And if you check many modern artists (who aren't white by the way) they will cite Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, maybe even Janet Jackson as their influences as well. Yes all female POP artists are influenced by Madonna but she has NO influence on R&B, Hip Hop, Soul, etc. The first to put it mainstream doesn't apply because again Cher had been doing it before Madonna, as were Diana Ross and Donna Summer. Heck even Debbie Harry. They were performing on tv and tours in costumes and putting out music videos (Donna Summer-Bad Girls) with cool performances (Donna Summer-She Works Hard For The Money 1984 Grammy's performance-which remains the most watched Grammy's moment of all time). And you keep using post 1984 receipts as proof of your argument, which is something I'm not trying to deny. You can keep saying Madonna was the first but to do say is to ignore female artists before her that didn't choose to go the gimmicky, provocative way that Madonna went (not saying that I don't love Madonna and her gimmicks but just like Gaga's, they are gimmicks nonetheless)

Walk in the street and ask people to give you at least 3 big moments of each artists you named. Madonna would easily be the easiest one. Not only because she is in the game since less longer, but only because she left a bigger impact in the industry. You said that Guiness thing, Madonna was named in 2007 the most successful female artist of the 21th century. The only thing people remember of cher is Believe. She might be a very strong figure in gay community, Madonna too of course, but when Madonna sold out stadiums no way there's just gays in it. Public in general still attracted by Madonna. Cher ? not that much, just look at her tour. the three singers you named all sold around 100 million albums with many many years over Madonna. Madonna is now at 300 million. That just means Madonna was the first mainstream and mass attracts singer. She was the first big touring female artist, the first female to reaches a 25 million copies album. She literally re-wrote the history of female in music industry.

SIS again I'm not denying her legacy but everything you're saying, all that you're trying to argue isn't proving anything about how she is the FIRST. That was what I took issue with in your post. She is a legend yes, but to say she's the first of the ladies to do this, no. Yes she did all these things, arguably better and with more attention and control of the media, but she was NOT the first, the only reason she had all this impact was because she chose to go above and beyond with being provocative, different, and gimmicky. The FACT of the matter, and you and I both know, is that where Madonna lacks in musical talent, she made up for it in star power.
Pop 4,541
Madonna is the original postmodern artist aka the kind of artist that takes from art history and makes it their own. So I don't get why she's mad at Gaga. Hypocrite. The Taylor Brigade: KNOCKOUT
