Donna Summer was not local, not if my mother, a teenager in the streets of Patiala, Punjab, India was dressing up like her spinning the records of Bad Girls, Hot Stuff, and Love to Love You Baby. Diana Ross was an international superstar capable of topping the charts across the world, she was named Billboard's female artist of the century for the 20th century, and in 1993, she was named the most successful female music artist of the century by Guiness for most records sold. Madonna's first tour The Virgin Tour was nowhere near as successful as Diana Ross's the Wiz tours and Supreme Tours. Yes Madonna became huge later on, but your point that Madonna was really the first doesn't add up.  And your assertion that these women were local artists is false, plain and simple.

Sis I'm agreeing with you on Madonna's impact and legacy and her influence, BUT you did say that she was the first real advancement, check your post. That's simply not true. And if you check many modern artists (who aren't white by the way) they will cite Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, maybe even Janet Jackson as their influences as well. Yes all female POP artists are influenced by Madonna but she has NO influence on R&B, Hip Hop, Soul, etc.

 

The first to put it mainstream doesn't apply because again Cher had been doing it before Madonna, as were Diana Ross and Donna Summer. Heck even Debbie Harry.
