Why isn't Katy dragged like Gaga was?

Because most people focus on what Gaga does to criticize her, no matter what her message is. They see her as "That freak who wants attention" and takes risks when it comes to music. Born This Way, just the album cover was controversial, the meat dress, the songs, the music videos, the performances, Lady Gaga as a person.

Katy Perry hasn't been criticized because people who like her only care about her music and not what she does as a person. They just listen to Roar or Dark Horse when they party and stuff and don't focus on the more serious stuff. Besides, Katy Perry hasn't "Flopped" as many people here like to call it, because her album sells well, and so do her singles. Just because a single doesn't top the charts it doesn't mean it wasn't successful, but people obsessed with popstars and chart positions like to think it does, because that's the most important thing that is going on in their lives.

Anyway, Gaga has created a huge standard for what she does, and she always needs to top herself, on the other hand, nobody expects Katy Perry to shock the world or take risks, because she's just designed to release "catchy pop music" that you play on the radio and the club. I mean, even Britney has taken more risks and she does almost nothing in the studio.

The media just loves selling stories about Gaga, no matter if it's about success or controversies. Express Yourself/Born This Way completely destroyed her, meanwhile, people didn't really care about Roar/Brave, other than the fans on these type of forums, and also that Katy Keene thing. It's just that Katy Perry is "another popstar" in the world, and nobody actually expects her to have a message or a purpose on this world.

Well there is several reasons. For starters, Gaga's debut was much more polarizing, trend-setting, and larger than Katy's, so they've held her to that standard. Also, Katy plays it safe. She does what is popular at the time, whereas Gaga does what she pleases. Katy's a lot easier to like because her message doesn't piss people off. It's like comparing Madonna to Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul, Mariah Carey, ect. Madonna was much more criticized by the media when at her peak than her peers were at the time because what she did was much more controversial and polarizing. But as history has proven, the polarizing and boundary-pushing musicians are some of the most memorable.

I really don't understand why the media is/was out for Gaga. It's really not fair honestly.

Gaga had Born This Way = Roar

So Dark Horse made Katy bulletproof from the media?

In a way, yes actually. 1 hit is ok, but 2 is great.

Plus she didn't release a Judas and an Alejandro, so I think it's a combination of these 3 things.

Katy is really inconsequential. She's just a popstar. People talk about the "end" of Gaga because she's an icon. Commercial success or not, she's a ubiquitous figure in pop culture. Everyone knows who she is, and everyone has an opinion on her. There's no "take it or leave it" with Gaga. She's polarizing. She's more than just her music. Eyes are always on her. Nobody cares if Katy has a flop single. A failure for Gaga, however, is a story.

Because the songs flopped because they were overshadowed by her own songs (roar, DH)

Bull****. There's tons of artists who had 2 hits at the same time.

Dark Horse is out of the top 40 on iTunes right now, what's the excuse for Birthday flopping w/ massive radio support? yeah. nothing. People just don't like it. Not overshadowed or anything. Same goes to Uncle.

Katy is a pretty standard pop girl that wears cute dresses and sings averagely pretty, that is why. Gaga is completely unique and new to the industry so media expects her to eat the world and charts, which is impossible if she wants to be loyal to her concepts.

Because Gaga dared to be different than your average manufactured pop star and although society keeps on preaching to be "unique" and be "yourself" they also criticize and frown upon you for being different thus bringing us back to the fact that there is a double standard within the media ...

Gaga has balls and people/media/society, feel threatened by that ...
