Tropico 4,145
ARTPOP Could mean anything. By that Gaga means that ARTPOP is how you percieve it. Because art isn't in black and white with an exact meaning on it in an art gallery. You have to make sense of it yourself. Gaga has given you the tools and the canvas. You must figure out how to make sense of it and put two and two together. It is a poetic and person story of Gaga's life. That's why she says "MY artpop could mean anything". Once you have tried to make sense of the theme then you can apply it to yourself... What does your ARTPOP mean? And ARTPOP is focused on bringing art and pop together in a wondeful explosion of passion. She creates the art (which is the music) in a pop form. And then it doesn't end there. She actually puts artistic visuals into this music to expose pop culture to art. Gaga being a pop icon means what ever she does, she exposes to pop culture. If she goes naked on the streets she exposes pop culture to nudity. This era she has tried (and succeded) to put art into her music. Like with Swine, she makes the song come alive through performing it and then puts art into it like at SXSW. She exposed us to Millie Brown, a performance artist. This was a fusion of pop music (swine) and art. That was ARTPOP. Gaga has incorporated art into many things this era. She incorporated art into fashion with the sea shell bikini being a nod to the birth of Venus, and then there was the Mona Lisa dress, then there was that fancy black and silver outfit she wore in france which was a reference to a painting as well as when she wore that crazy colourful outfit with the weird make up which made it look like she has 2 faces was also artistic. And finally ARTPOP is also about pop culture. She comments on pop culture with songs like DWUW, Applause, Donatella, ARTPOP. Like DWUW... A song about being attacked by the tyrants of pop culture (the media). She used two of the most recognized vistims... R.Kelly and Terry. This is to further comment on pop culture. Oh yeah, and she incorporated art into her visuals. All the art references in Applause video (the Black Swan being one) and with G.U.Y. The lego art work. Genius era tbh. ♢ Social Justice Enthusiast ♢
squeala 875
ARTPOP is this huge overarching philosophy and I understand how it's hard to swallow at first... I started writing a list of the concepts I hear in the title track but like I don't even think it's something that can be taught, you just have to listen to the album in a good frame of mind and watch all the interviews and stuff
elijahfan 26,184
I see it as a work philosophy. Being able to make a type of art that is legitimate, but also not entirely hermetic, if it makes any sense. That's what Gaga's been doing her whole career: quality pop music "Pop music will never be low-brow".

If only Art History classes were required and taught in schools, people might actually understand it a little more. I took the class at my university right when this era was gearing up and was completely floored by the KNOWN works of art she's incorporated this whole time! It was breath taking! But it also points out the loss of interest and lack of knowledge that people have nowadays about something as important as art.

BigDreamer 72
I honestly feel like the way she kicked things off with Applause and its imagery and ideas along with all of the technological ideas is what she was hoping to have more of. The music is almost completely pop but I think the ART aspect was supposed to be more expressed visually as the era progressed but the whole thing kinda fell through when they had trouble deciding on an actual second single. djBuffoon 12,120
There's no reason why one has to understand what it's about. At the end of the day, it's a collection of songs that were designed to exist on their own, outside of an overriding arc (like any pop album). Having said that, any interpretation (except for the lazy cop-out of "it doesn't mean anything") is also worth exploring. You seem to have some good ideas already. I look at it as a distillation of her journey literally through the worlds of ART and POP. It is about this woman who is negotiating a journey to the peak of her artistry, while also feeding this work that she has such passion for through the pop machine, and all of the results that come with it (positive and negative). I believe that the album is about taking ownership of your work, ensuring yourself that the creative intentions are pure, and deflecting the forces that try to pull you from it. But, because it's Gaga, we hear all of this through an entertaining and diverse soundscape that draws from many different genres and blends them in ways that only she can. To be clear, it is a concentration of her career up to this point, while also functioning as a pop album all on its own. Yet again, a true marriage of art and pop. In response to the people saying that Gaga doesn't even know what it's about, try using your head. Of course she does, and every bit of interpretation that she has given throughout the interviews and promotion is totally accurate. It is all of these meanings and more. But perhaps, using her power as the artist, she is trusting her fans to find ourselves in her story and not spoon-feeding us every hidden meaning. jojo Freud 653
Actually I agree with that, ARTPOP is the only gaga album that doesnt have a personal connotative meaning for me.
oprahwinfrey 35
its just random music tbh. not that thats a bad thing, i love ARTPOP but its no holy grail. its an album. no matter what gaga wants it to be this. there is no clear concept which i believed killed this album. the music is good there is just no direction. Coulorcraft 170
I look at this way. ARTPOP is what she likes to call her creativity. Her performance is ARTPOP. And it could mean anything. Its not just POP as in POP MUSIC, but POP CULTURE. She made the statement early on that she is "every artist". She pulls inspiration from artists all over the world and from different genres. We've seen it early on in the way she emulates her idols. Bowie, Michael Jackson, Modonna. And she uses them to create her art. Some may call it stealing, but they are missing the big picture. She is not stealing. She is recreating. Giving things new meanings. And we are just now beginning to see her pull from fine art and painting and bringing them to life. Like Venus. All the while she is showing her audience the true nature of FAME. The Good and the Bad while experiencing it herself. Practically ever outfit she wears has a reference. Remember that her life is a performance. Her life is ARTPOP. And it could mean anything. This album is in a way a statement for her career. What is was and what it is. Tropico 4,145
this. there is no clear concept which i believed killed this album. the music is good there is just no direction. Ugh. Just because you don't get it doesn't mean there isn't one. Take a look at the post of people who actually TRIED to understand ARTPOP. Conceptually it is brilliant. ♢ Social Justice Enthusiast ♢

POPDEVASTATION 0
I see it this way... The Fame - waking up the inner sense of fame in you The Fame Monster - facing and dealing with the demons, monsters of being famous Born This Way - finding and accepting your identity ARTPOP - releasing yourself from standards, norms to know what true freedom is and in that way (after you get to know all your personalities whether you feel famous or not) you make your life an unique piece of artwork All in all, i think ARTPOP is an ''ultimate tool'' in releasing a person's identity, image and spirit and it's goal is waking up that creative rebelliousness which can set you free and make you an artist of your own life

The freedom album allowing one to become a creative and rebellions artistic soul! Wow! I love when people think deep into this stuff! :flutter: ♢ Social Justice Enthusiast ♢

I do see the art and its references in the visuals of this era but I kinda didn't see what any of that in the songs. You may say I sorta expected songs with "artistic/dark" themes when I knew the album was about mixing art with pop, but then I was like but what about songs like Fashion!, Donatella and J&D? Maybe it's how I perceived the concept of art.
