So I watched Lolita a couple days ago for the first time and I have to say it is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. I plan on reading the book eventually. I think it is a really beautiful story/movie and shows that love comes in many different forms. I don't usually watch movies, but this one definitely is one of my favorites! :legend:

Please rate the 1962 film and not the book or the newer film. However, you can post about the book and the newer film.  :awkney:

If the subject matter of this film triggers anyone I apologize, please leave this thread and have a nice day/night. I didn't make this thread with an intention to bother anyone. :coffee:

Watched it a while back so I'd need to watch again for a better answer but I remember thinking it was brilliant. Even though they cut out anything that would be too offensive, it's still pretty amazing that it came out over 50 years ago when you think about the subject matter. A film like that would still be controversial now.

I'll give it a 9.

I personally love how everything is hinted at instead of explicitly shown. I find the movie overall was tastefully done.

I love it because I was able to relate to Lolita, Charlotte (Lolita's mom), and Humbert. Not that I like little girls (Humbert) or older men (Lolita), but I've felt what each character has felt. I was really able to empathize and connect with those characters. I really love the movie and how it doesn't portray Humbert as a monster. Love comes in many different forms I believe. :emo:

interesting, i'll watch the movie and maybe give the book a try

You can watch the movie for free online. That's what I did.

The book is more explicit I've heard. A lot more expicit. So I mean it depends on what you want. The clean or dirty version. :ohwell:

Yeah I agree, it's definitely thought provoking. I haven't actually read the book but I hear she's a lot younger in it. Apparently the 97 film is more explicit, but I haven't seen it.

In the book I think she is 12 and in the 1962 film she is 14/15. I mean I don't condone pedophillia and those types of relationships, but Lolita advanced onto Humbert so... it isn't a male predator preying on a young female imo. It is really thought provoking though and interesting.

I just really related to their "secret relationship" and I feel like love can come in many different forms not just a man and woman in marriage. I personally feel like being married doesn't necessarily = love or that being in an official (boyfriend/girlfriend/labelled) relationship = love. Thank you for rating the movie and giving your opinion on it. I like seeing what other people think and how they perceive things. :spin:

dirty of course :ohwell:

you dirty animal :teehee:

good luck in your travels :derpga:

I've always been curious about seeing this movie, but I've never gotten around to watching it. However I got some free time this weekend so maybe I'll watch it. Does it matter which version I see?

You can watch/read any version you like. The poll is about the 1962 film version and my posts have been about that version. I haven't seen the 1990 something version or read the book yet.

So if you want to rate/use the poll please watch the 1962 film. If you want to watch/read the other versions of the story you are free to do so and talk can about them in this thread along with the 1962 film.

Ok, i watched it last night and i thought it was a really great film.

The beginning was kinda confusing, but then when 4 year earlier popped up on screen it made me wonder what escalated that, so i was hooked to see what was gonna lead to it. Some of the story was pretty funny in a dark and weird way. I found myself laughing so much at how thirsty Lolita's mom was :toofunny: . Humbert was interesting, you'd think he'd be portrayed as some pervert, but he's just a guy who fell deeply in love with someone. Lolita was great too, she was beautiful, very charismatic and witty too. I hated the Clare Quilty guy, the way he talked was annoying, and i felt a strange aura whenever he was on screen that made me uneasy about him. But i guess that show's how good a job the actor did in his portrayal. The ending was so sad, i felt bad for Humbert that she moved on and didn't want to be with him anymore. Anyways the film is pretty tamed compared to today's standards, and i didn't think it was very controversial. Than again i may be bias, seeing as how i was once in a relationship with someone older than me. In fact i think that's maybe why i liked the film, i  identified somewhat with Lolita in someways. But the ending made me identify with Humbert as well, it hurts when someone you loved so much moves when you haven't.

Anyways, the film was great and i definitely would recommend it for people to see at least once in their life.

The entire movie I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. :toofunga:
