There is a huge difference in forgetting something such as important paperwork to a meeting or forgetting to set something out to thaw for supper, but your CHILD, a HUMAN BEING, your own flesh and blood - there is absolutely no excuse whatsoever for it and the fact that you're in this man's corner is just as sickening. Your variables are terribly barbaric. You do not forget your child. Period. Yes call me an idiot, because you're too emotional to see this man has committed no crime, and because you (clearly) know nothing about how the brain works. It doesn't matter if the baby is the queen of England, the brain forgets or makes mistakes sometimes and in rare cases this kind of thing happens. The brain doesn't distinguish between a baby, a phone, car keys, or a purse. They are all the same thing to the brain. It's disturbing that anybody thinks it is acceptable to throw this man in prison because of this tragic accident. Tell me, what would throwing him in prison accomplish? I don't think he should be punished or treated as a murder cause it was obviously an accident..... This. When you create a routine, you sometimes think you did a step when you didn't. His brain thought he dropped the child off at daycare, even though he did not. He didn't murder his child. They are basically saying any parent who has a child die due to their accidents are murderers. That is wrong, and actually a horrible thing to say. He's a complete idiot and it was a really stupid careless move on his part. But i'm not sure if just tossing him in jail is the right thing to do. The main purpose of jail is to keep people that are a THREAT to society locked away so that they won't be able to hurt other people. And is this guy a threat to anybody else? Probably not. Not unless he has another young child that he could forget about. Think and process what he did?!?!?!?!? Seriously??! Its obvious that he's EXTREMELY distraught over this situation. This was his SON..... and i'm sure he will be processing this every day for the rest of his life whether he is in jail or not. There are many similar situations where parents' stupidity leads to the death of their child. Like those parents who leave guns lying around and then one of their kids ends up shooting themselves or another person. Its horrible, but what will putting them in jail accomplish?? Give them time to "process the situation"? Because if they weren't sitting in prison they would just forget the whole thing right? They aren't a threat to the public and their mistake will surely haunt them for the rest of their life. In the brain, the "ball pit" has a hole in the bottom, big enough for a ball to fit through. As you add more balls to the pit, the weight pushes one of those balls out of the bottom, hence you forget something. New balls are light, and stay on top easily. When you do something every day, in a set pattern, it's like putting a drop of water in the balls associated with that pattern. Eventually the water builds up in the balls, and they become heavier, and the odds of them sinking to the bottom and going through the hole are increased. But, because you can't SEE the bottom of the pit, you assume the ball is probably still in there. Hence, why you forget your keys or wallet, yet swear that you grabbed them on the way out, more easily than you forget to do a step in a new recipe or while setting up furniture. I'm pretty sure I've never forgotten that I was responsible for a child before lol. Car keys, yes. Wallet, yes. A child? Never. Just because it has yet to happen, doesn't mean it's not possible. The son was supposed to be dropped off to daycare. He never meant to harm the child, all he did was forget that he hadn't dropped him off yet. Yes this is horrible. but the father didn't deserve this. That said, he still has to be punished, because ours isn't a system of justice it is a system of law. This is just a tragedy all round. This story is a reminder of how easy it is to forget.
