There are many songs that are better than Born this Way on the album. better in many terms. Applause is also, not what I consider best on ARTPOP. Actually, to me, Applause is far from the best. It did good even without it so imagine a s-xy controversial video to boost the interest. It was catchy, relatable, and had an urban flair - imo her best single choice in a long time. But that isn't something unusual since the lead ones are meant for that - to sell the most in order to create enough hype for the album release. Not to mention, the full support of the fanbase could be seen on the commercial reception of the lead after months (or even years) of anticipation. Post-album singles tend to sell less as compared to the pre-album ones because majority, if not the entirety, of the fanbase have probably already purchased the album anyway. A double purchase isn't a practical thing to do. Quality-wise, in terms of lyrical content and production? I only consider one of her leads to be the "album's best", and that's Bad Romance.
