Lack of shocking value in ARTPOP

I agree with the most, and I love Swine. But this song is not close to the GP. Her huge hits were about all of us and love. Swine is about unfortunate s-xual past. The vomit performance generated tons of media, but like 90% of it was very bad. I have never ever found a comment by someone praising the performance. Such single would draw tons of attention, but all I see would be gp saying "Ew, Swine, what a name for a song..She is disgusting, now she sings about swines and dirty s-x, not love.. So try-hard" and etc.. Basically what happened after SXSW

Applause's debut performance was meant to be extremely shocking but MTV didn't allow her to do it, that really dampened the whole era.

What she had planned would have been amazing.

 

Someone like Gaga has to keep outdoing themselves if they wanna stay in the spotlight and she hasn't done that (I'm talking about the shock value and theatrics) she seems to have lost something creatively when it comes to that which is especially evident with the ARTRAVE tour. If Gaga was gonna stay in the spotlight the same way she has been in the past it would take things like the original MTV performance and things like that. Either that or she would have to go in a 100% different direction and do something like that acoustic album with Rick Rubin that's been talked about.

 

The reason is because the general public is very fickle. Of course fans will make excuses and blame this or that, and I'm sure the lack of promotion and problems with her team didn't help, but the truth is fans were all over Gaga because she was something new and had a certain mystique. But she's not new anymore, she's been overexposed and due to the fact she hasn't done performances or anything legitimately shocking she's lost that mystique and they've moved on.

 

Do I think she can have the same type of success again ? Maybe, but she's gonna have to plan things a lot better. She shouldn't give to many details about her next project and let the actual art do the talking. When she releases new music or starts a new era she would probably have to completely reinvent herself. And this time she would have to convince people to believe it, and I mean really believe it!!!

I think it's very difficult to shock people for years. Maybe it's time for her to establish her career as a more serious artist. Nowadays more people seem to be shocked when she is dressing "normal" than when she is wearing some crazy fashion.

 

And I am sorry but I can't support Swine as a single. It's been my least favourite Gaga song since it's release. I just don't like it at all. 

It's so harsh sounding that it's not enjoyable to listen to.  Live it's better.  Jewels & Drugs is worse.

Well, Swine is already sort of infamous from SXSW. It's a great song.

 

I don't think Gaga really needs to be shocking to be appealing though. Sure, it can help, but over-reliance on shock value kind of treads a bit into Miley territory, where being shocking is more important than the message or content. I don't think lack of shock value is what held ARTPOP back from connecting with the masses.

I don't need shock.  I need really great songs and a cohesive era and brilliant videos for art's sake, not shock.  I enjoyed Applause a lot and GUY for the most part even though I am not a big fan of the song.  People are missing the boat on needing to be shocked.  They can't be with Gaga because she bombards an era with a thousand and one images and nudity and everything but the kitchen sink.  Six years into her career she's done it all.  I always thought she should have held back at a  certain point instead of more, more, more.  It was an oversaturatiion of Gaga in a new bizarre outfit or two or three every day.  So forget shock, nude videos, performances all over the place visually.   Just be a little more  cohesive in a vision and not all helter skelter.  And if shock comes about naturally, that's different.  

 

Madonna's Ray of Light era is one of the best I've ever seen for a clear vision of presenting her album and promo and videos and tour.  And you knew who she was during that era.  The Monster Ball gave me that same feeling.  But Gaga's theme of changing four times a day and majorly different looks too many times to count before the tour even begins and countless other things I am forgetting and then that look changes for tour is almost exhausting after six years, and I don't feel as connected to the music.  I guess all of that does wear thin for me, not for others I'm sure.  When it works, like right now her look, it works, the Italian curls.  Other times it just seems overkill.  Gaga is unusual from other pop stars.  She didn't need to keep trying to one-up herself, but instead should have paced herself better.  People are immune to her now in many respects.

If Gaga gives us an album she loves with her passion, the radio isn't the most important thing for me. Most of us care about it but no one of us wants just a catchy radio friendly album. It's not all about charts and spins.

That's ARTPOP, imo.  I believe Gaga is passionate about ARTPOP and believes it to be her most creative album.  And it's not just a catchy radio friendly album and it's not all about charts and spins.  I, for one, am a big fan of ARTPOP.
