I said it was risky as soon as the concept was announced, because the public isn't there for art.  But it did not fail.  It sold less than some fans wished it would.  But Gaga got to produce the album to her own vision, her creativity, her artistry, and that is success.  She got it out there for posterity and for the enjoyment of those who like it; that is success.  She did not buckle under the pressure of the industry, she held firm with her concept; that is success.  I love it, and many other do also, and I love that Gaga had the courage to go ahead and do it.

One more thing;  Look at the header photo here (which I took from a wonderful Steve Nasty video, btw).    Look at the joy.   This scene plays out again and again at every performance of artRave.  I define success in terms of Gaga's happiness.  https://twitter.com/RonMilliken

I live outside the space time continuum.

Basically implying Gaga supporting the LGBT community has lead to her selling less records? :rip:

If I'm honest Gaga wouldn't have sold as much as she has in the past without her LGBT advocacy. A good cause and a smart business move on her part. She sells freedom and love, creativity and spirit and that's exactly what a large section of the oppressed LGBT community needs/needed. So no, the gays aren't to blame!

ARTPOP is way better than Born This Way.

She has lost a lot fans with Born This Way and I really disliked that album.

I really enjoyed The Fame Monster but I think her next record will be better.

I don't think it was necessarily "meant to fail," but she obviously couldn't stay on top forever. She was destined to underperform at some point, and she'll underperform again or maybe a few times per the course of her career, but she'll rise up again and have great critical and commercial success too. Nothing is static in the music business, especially for such a polarizing figure.

ARTPOP is a great pop record but gaga and her team did their best to bury it's potential six feet under.

Gaga: NO! DIE! *slams with shovel*

You don't deserve a point of view if the only thing you see is you.

No, I honestly did NOT see it coming. I never thought Gaga would stay on top forever, but I didn't expect ARTPOP to get so much backlash and to underperform the way it has. But you know what? It's okay. It was bound to happen someday, and now it has. The way I see it, it can only get better from here. Gaga is strong and talented, and she will rise again. :)

I think there is a difference between being "impossible to meet its expectations" and being "meant to fail"

From the moment she announced the title I knew this album would underperform.

The minute she announced the album, I thought "She's hit writers block", although I was hopeful.

As it turns out, ARTPOP, the song, is at least in part about writers block (I think - "Keep it tight, sometimes the simplest move is right, *the melody that you choose can rescue you" [emphasis added])
