VforVendetta 2,024
I think she should stop playing it safe in regards to the music. She didn't push boundaries with ARTPOP, just stayed in well-established guidelines. She needs to go big or go home. Partynauseous would be playing it mostly safe lyrically while pushing the boundaries in the music which is exactly what I think Gaga should do and where she shines. It's why people liked her- she was a beacon. I don't think TEOG or Y&I were neccessarily playing it safe. They were just good songs to begin with. Y&I is amazing. TEOG is beautiful and fun. And why is Applause safer than BTW, TEOG, MTN or Alejandro for example? It is much riskier choice than all these songs with exception to BTW maybe. Bye 3,947
I would agree that she needs to release more risky singles like Venus but the OP was a bit messy especially when criticising Applause, her best lead single :deadbanana:

It is much riskier choice than all these songs with exception to BTW maybe. The only reason it was risky were her vocals in the verses and lyrics. Musically and structurally it was an earworm, which is why I think they chose it. I just don't think they expected people to take the lyrics so literally, which was not very thought out on her team's part. MTN and BTW were more risky lyrically and musically imo. Alejandro was just a perfect pop piece, so that was definitely safe even though the video pushed limits more than anything on ARTPOP.
idldte 2
Applause should have been the last single. Not first... releasing a lead single called Applause is just
RyanBall 1
This whole post is a mess with all the respect. TEOG is one of Gaga's best songs ever with the most powerful lyrics ever. MTN was not even commercial or generic. Applause lyrics are not relatable and there is only one reason the song became a single, it was masterpiece song that till today it never gets old. The only generic choice I see is GUY. Applause is definitely not a masterpiece, nothing ground-breaking lyrically or sonically but just a good pop song. And if G.U.Y was so generic surely radio would have eaten it up

The fact that Applause is cathcy doesn't take anything from the fact that it is a top of the class Pop song. All Gaga's big hits are earworms including Bad Romance and PokerFace. As for the Alejandro video, it is more controversial definitely but I honestly don't think that it was better than the Applause video that is full of beautiful references and sums up the idea behind Lady Gaga perfectly. Imo Applause song and video is highlight and a starting point in Gaga's career. As for the album you know my opinion that its better than TF/TFM and equally good as BTW, I don't wanna start this pointless convo again.

Everyone out of this fanbase sais that GUY is mediocore and its definitely the most generic song on the album. Applause has innovations in its instrumental and its lyrics GUY could only dream of. Applause is ageless and the instrumental of the song contains the whole emotion of applause within, something very rare for a pop song and a sign of a musical genious. This doesn't have anything to do with favorite albums. lol I just don't think Applause had the immediate catchiness of BR or PF though. It just didn't strike a resonating chord within people. The lyrics were not relateable, which is what the others had going for it. The Applause video was definitely great, but I think in terms of marketing, GP, and fans it was a little too self-indulgent, which is not a good thing. It would have been a better fit for a last single this era.
blacklistedd 599
I don't think shes playing it safe at all. Have you even looked at her this era? The music is more radio ready than BTW but still. I don't think she played it safe this era, I think she just let every negative article and criticism get to her and this era is a reflection of how much she actually cares what everyone thinks. She didn't make something safe, she made something self-conscious.

If the song was released back in TFM or early BTW days it would have smashed imo. Anyway the song is still a lead single and I am very happy with it. Runway 27,876
Applause isn't relatable but it was hit anyway, YAI was a huge risk for a dance artist, DWUW did better than venus could ever have

Brandon 457
Neither Bad Romance and Alejandro nor Applause were safe single choices though. They were. Bad Romance is catchy, has "iconic" gaga lyrics, a killer music video and released after a worldwide smash era.

leoj 2
She released a country rock ballad as a single, she released a song with R. Kelly so yeah she is totally playing it safe Do What You Want was a big... mess..... a song about rape... to the naked ear.. featuring a man who is hated by the GP.. because he peed on women..... I mean it's a good song.. but..................................... I believe it is another stab at her career...
