Applause was a hit, so it was the correct choice for lead single if we look at the chart performance. But as always 'Music Not The Bling' so Venus would have the perfect lead single for me ! The GP didn't respond to G.U.Y. or Do What U Want because they don't like her. Anything thats the lead single has the opportunity to go Top 10 and had it been Do What U Want instead it would have been waaaaaaaaaaaaay more successful than Applause imo. It would've given the era an entirely different jump start and would have been a much more capable competitor to Roar (not that I don't love Applause) Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Other than the message though. Gaga needed to come back into the spotlight with a song that said "I know I've been gone for a really long time and it killed be to be away from you, my fans you I live for and would never leave!" and not some random song about s-x and celestial bodies and/or d--gs (Venus, GUY, DWUW, etc) Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

If they like a song the would buy. But for radio it does matter.Another but, radio treated DWUW good so it is not the deal. You are right about the backlash though. Applause and Do What U want were definitely the perfect lead, and second singles. Sorry. Besides Dope or Gypsy and maybe s-xxx dreams. NO ONE would have been here for ARTPOP or VENUS or AURA. GUY and Do What U Want were perfect singles and had they been Katys they would've gone straight to number one. They didn't do well because people have a negative perception of Gaga and the media tries to make her look like a fool. Applause did well because it was the lead single and even then it didn't do as well as people wanted.
