freebit 6,240
On some level everyone wants what they create to be successful. I think she likes having big success, and really misses it, but hates what one usually has to do for it (work with big/"hot" producers, have an easily digestible image for the masses etc). Whispering 18,865
Does "I write for the music not the charts" means "I don't care about the charts"? I don't think so, it means that is not the main purpose of her music or her career. And we are in the "complaining about the tour" era, charts are so March of 2014. This! I don't know why people can't understand the difference between the two statements! Someone gets confused about this simple concept at least once a day and makes a thread (in some form) about it. What's really funny, is the same four or five people show up in every thread and never seem to be able to understand this very simple explanation. They are either incapable of complex thought...or they are trolls!
bumblebee 2,528
In the article which was published in Billboard prior to Born This Way, she has explained that she feels extremely honored and proud to sell millions of records and score No.1s, but it is clearly not the reason why she is making music. I think the chart performance of her album does matter to her in some way, but the joy of creating and the process of sharing the experience with fans is much more important. The thing about her is that even if she had not broken through with The Fame, she would still be a music performance artist! She would just be playing in some random NYC bars and studios on the lower East Side. When she is onstage, she forgets about all the sales, I'm sure. Besides, could you say who was that person that "comes in and becomes the new favorite"? I am really wondering. From early 2009 to May 2011 Gaga collected a string of seven No.1 hits on Pop Radio, moved over 13,000,000 albums worldwide, won 5 Grammy Awards, dominated the headlines for wearing meat and bleeding onstage, accompanying it with a $227,000,000 world tour. I seriously can not come up with the name of any other music artist who would be equally successful with radio, digital sales, album sales, publicity, awards and touring, all at the same time
yxi 4,999
"All the songs were designed to be hits, all the songs were designed to be radio-friendly" - Lady Gaga about ARTPOP There goes your answer.
GagaDragon 10
Deep down of course any person would love to see their music high up on charts and praised for it, only natural. But i don't think it restricts her that much, it's just another piece to the puzzle.
emiher 2
Like many people in this thread have said I don't think it's her reason for making music But it would be unrealistic to say she doesn't care at least to some degree Any of us would care even a little bit if we were her
rivingtonreject 2
I believe her when she says it doesnt hurt her to know that something of hers isnt selling well because she loves/love making it regardless. BUT, I do think she enjoys being on "top" when she is.
LaLuna 12,732
I'm sure she cares a little... but definitely not as much as us chart-obsessed monsters
Tropico 4,145
Gaga only wants enough money to make more music and tour. She doesn't care about it as much as most Little Monsters do. She justs wants enough to do what she loves. She isn't gonna give two flying f--ks if a song doesn't't hit top 10 because just getting it on top 50 is enough for her to make more singles. Gaga is different. She isn't a simple mindless pop star making music for the money. She is an artist making music for herself and her fans. That's why she is the saving grace of pop music and she'll be remembered for her individuality. #ProudToBeALittleMonster :legend: ♢ Social Justice Enthusiast ♢
Guest
She's not obsessed, but she does care...
GagaisHotAF 419
I think she does. Just not for this album tbh. I feel like she will focus on the charts more next era. Probably on Grindr
Gagz 2,579
She's tweeted about her chart success on multiple occasions. She wouldn't do that if she didn't care. This. Her actions show that she cares about the charts. She doesn't make her music to cater to them.
fede ARTPOP 6,737
of course she does...who..specially in music industry dont want to be #1? :reductive: MAYHEM / ARTPOP
Born To Slay 10,996
I would throw that person off a hotel roof. Ain't nobody ever replacing my ass. And I think Gaga genuinely doesn't care about the charts themselves, she just hates the negative drama and connotation that comes along with them. I was the understudy in the school play last year, so I payed someone to push them down the stairs 3 days b4 the show! I was the star!
Klinky 2
I think she probably does care about charting a little, but only so that she can ensure that she has enough money to go touring with the extravagance she brings.
