But it's not actually her that's milking her brand.  Others make the business decisions about promo and products, and even tell her what to say as promotion.  Gaga is focused on her art.  But what the public see is the promo and products and they think it's all her doing.  You only hear the truth in the heartfelt interviews where she says she doesn't even like to sell perfume and she feels she is being used to make money for other people.  Some artists may be "all in" when it comes to commercialism, but that's not Gaga.

this is a really naive way of thinking. of course Gaga doesn't make every commercial decission but she's not a communist either. she has the right and choice to make money off merch and she has, and that's okay.

she's not only focused on her art, she's also a great business woman and she's aware that she needs to make money now that she can for the days she wont be able to.

She's absolutely not trying to "milk" Joanne or have Joanne there for the purpose of it being a "money maker". Even if it seems like she's trying hard to "milk", she would have not created an album like Joanne in the first place. She wouldn't need to "milk" it if she just created an album like The Cure.

I wouldn't say so. I think money is not the goal here. I think Gaga is really trying to change her whole image, hence insisting so much in this era. Merchandise and emojis are not money schemes, ultimately, but image schemes, so that people will no longer associate her with the meat dress or the hairbow.

You and I know that of course she doesn't make every commercial decision, but the key point of my post was that "what the public see is the promo and products and they think it's all her doing".  The public doesn't know that in some cases she has little or no involvement in commercial decisions, and they may view her as a money grubber when they see products up for sale.  Yes, she has the right to make money off merch, but that's very far from her focus.

I think she is aware that she already has enough money to retire.

Unfortunately that's just the way the music business is these days...everyone's trying to make money from everything else but the actual albums...luckily Gaga has a huge fanbase and is able to do these things to make money to finance her tours and videos....we know that we won't be getting ripped off cuz she invests a LOT of her profit into her career, giving back to us monsters

Gaga is trying to make money all the time. She's an artist first, a businesswoman second. Wasn't Adele trying to make a profit when she first kept 25 off streaming services? Wasn't Beyoncé trying to make a profit when she released that $300 Lemonade book? Every artist tries to make a profit. No shame in that. Why are we acting like it's a bad word?

It used to be that artists relied solely on their music to make money (and if you were big enough have  a Pepsi deal). But it wasn't uncommon then for artists to sell 10million copies of their albums. I think it was only the early 2000s where artists were marketing as a "brand".

Music sales have plummeted since so artists and the record companies have to look at other avenues like brand tie-up , song licensing, merchandising/cosmetics/perfume, tour. 

Think about it. The top singers in the Forbes list make around $50million a year. Music sales and touring along does not cover that.

At the end of the day the music industry is a business, and for Gaga to remain relevant in the pop space she has to "play the game". It's ironic to say this but her creative freedom comes at a price.
