Hmm I'm not sure as I've always viewed Gaga as a pop artist, and I think the general public always have too. I think to try and avoid the pop label is to insinuate there's something WRONG with being POP -- there's a stigma attached to pop (I guess people think of it as commercialism marketing etc etc). But you can be GREAT POP.

I never saw Gaga as part of a counter culture either. I saw her (if not as a pop artist), as just her OWN individual artist, REFERENCING various counter cultures (throughout 20th century and today). I don't think she wore meat to maintain her status as "countercultural" and distance herself from pop either.

Now that Gaga is less in the mainstream however, and with the little monster fanbase, and that she mostly has a gay fanbase, perhaps this could be considered an alternative pop subculture.

In Halsey's individual case, her voice sounds so poppy to me. I wouldn't think of her as "alternative" if I'd never heard her before.

Drake and Kendrick Lamar always feature as rappers so maintain their "rapper" status, not just because they're guys imo.

Artists like Lykke Li, Grimes, iamamiwhoami, KATE BUSH, Bjork, even Lana Del Rey I would consider alternative artists. I'd never think of Halsey as alternative.

I'm undecided about the gender point she mentions earlier in the video. She could have a point about the gender thing I guess -- do we consider Nicki Minaj "pop" ??

Maybe that's because she is poppy though. I'd always consider Azealia Banks a rapper for example.

that's very true.

people screamed SHE SOLD OUT when she released the cure, did people forget she started with pop trendy music, like her first hit - Just Dance.

When she puts out artsy stuff, that's not pop = she's pretentious.

When she puts out a simple pop record = she sold out.

hmm I feel like maybe people say she sold out because everyone thought she was going down a new route with Joanne and all, and then she suddenly comes out with a song like The Cure which in terms of production is SUCH a current sound (I actually like that particular tropical sound and the current sounds of pop though lol -- and I LOVE The Cure).

Just Dance felt like a pop song at the time but it didn't necessarily feel like a current sound or everything that was out at the time. Ke$ha's TICK TOCK felt like it was copying Just Dance to me at the time

I agree about people calling her pretentious when she did ARTPOP for example though !!!!!!!!

Awww, that was so sweet of her to spill it like that. She seems like a nice girl. I'm not a big fan of her music, but I very must respect her for her kindness.
