Trump is only a politician, but one person alone couldn't have done everything Trump did. It's very individualistic to think otherwise. There's an entire apparatus behind him, a whole spirit of the times, a fierce behind-the-scenes struggle that none of you are taking into account. Trump could have died in his assassination attempt, but do you believe that would be the end of his movement, his way of thinking, his way of doing things? Do you think that he, and only he, is the sole reason why the United States is in its current state? Do you believe that those opposing Trump are any better than him, that Trump was merely a historical accident, a mistake that should never have happened? One needs to read a bit of history. It's well known that people like Trump are anything but a historical mistake. Trump may not run again. His branch of the Republican Party might fade. But the conditions that brought him to power, and all the support he receives from the most powerful sectors of the economy, will still be there. And so will his clash with the Democratic Party elites. What is happening in the United States now is the fault of the United States and no one else. Trump was a huge mistake. Nobody ever thought he'd win in 2015, the party didn't even want him. It just worked out extremely well for him. Trump is a unicorn to the party, it's evident with every other member of his party. If it were the way he speaks, MTG would be more popular. If it were just policies, McConnell and Mike Johnson would have more say (they obviously hold a lot of political power, but their authority lies behind Trump). The party leadership STILL does not like him, but they're scared of him. If he were merely a politician, they would have buried him by now and moved on. But they know they need him. Republicans are going to feel very lost without him. They are gonna fragment, because a few will get power hungry. And when Trump is gone, there won't be anyone to fall rank and file behind. At least not yet. 1 hour ago, Reality said: I don't know how you read my comment and extrapolated that... You're talking about how Democrats need to have a "major makeover," and I agree with you. Dems need to understand that they can't take voters for granted and they must work harder to come up with the necessarily policies to get their messages across effectively. That's why someone like Bernie was so great; he had a populist agenda and character that many found relatable and refreshing. That being said, I don't understand why the onus is always on the Dems to stop "putting down" the other side. Trump and MAGA's rhetoric has only gotten more volatile over time and he won! Not only the Electoral College but the popular vote for the first time! They consistently spew out hateful, bigoted language and Dems are constantly in the position of "Well, stop being mean to them because we need their moderate/centrist votes!" It's frankly bullsh*t. To your last paragraph though...the "Make America Great Again" phrase was literally used and embraced by Ronald Reagan. It isn't even specific to Trump. And I'm sorry, but you are incredibly naive to think the movement will stop with Trump. It may eventually die down, but not for a long time. The Republicans of yesteryear are the minority now. The Republican Party IS Trump's party and he will only surround himself with people who are willing to do his bidding. What happens after he's gone? Those people who surrounded him are now indebted to the movement. You think JD Vance is going to back to calling Trump "America's Hitler" after he finishes this term? You think people like Mitch McConnell, MTG, and Mike Johnson will denounce Trump after he's gone? You think those in the Trump cult will magically see the light and the error of their ways after he's spent 8 years in the Oval Office and a total 13 years in the public eye as a politician? You are a dreamer if you believe any of that to be true. Most people are gonna act like they love Trump when they didn't, once he's gone. Some of the ideals might stick around, but the magical thing about Trump is execution. The party jumps to action because they're scared of him and backlash from him. There's nobody to whip them into shape once he's gone. Look at House leadership the past 2 years. Look at how they scrambled to hold seats without him. His platform gives him power. And HIS power, not the Republican Party's, gives the party control. They will have an extremely hard time finding an identity without him, because he's made sure he's the only one to listen to in their party.

Hi! Traumatized Dem/liberal/leftist/whatever American here. Thank you for saying this. I owe you a reaction/reputation point, but I ran out of them for today. This has been nagging at me with every post-mortem I've read today that gets all high and mighty about "what the left got wrong and needs to do differently." The holier-than-thou attitudes all-around are really getting to me. If these talking heads can so quickly and easily identify what went wrong now, where were they during the campaign?! Helping?! Calling up the DNC and letting them know how smart they are?! I sure hope so. I realize that everyone is trying to make sense of all this, but the smugness is not a good look. Let me be clear: I'm not absolving anyone from taking accountability for what happened. We need to reflect and make changes ASAP. But seriously, there's no way all of this can be on Biden, Kamala, and the Dems. Look at how much better our campaign was run this time compared to 2016! After that election, we loved to accuse Hillary of "not campaigning enough in Wisconsin." Kamala and friends went to Wisconsin umpteen times--it was seriously getting ridiculous. We actually learned things and did them better! Yea, us! Was it enough? Did it work? No. It's okay to admit there are evil forces out of our control. I'm not saying we should give up or not self-reflect, but I'm just saying that we need to give ourselves some grace for doing all that we could with the situation at hand. Let's make sure we're giving decades of Repubes blocking Dem-supported legislation to improve everyone's lives its due. Oh, you don't like how things are now? Well, you should've supported the legislation we put forward back then to fix that thing that you now blame us for! We wonder why so much of America is un- or undereducated and we have so many school shootings... Also, let's make sure we're giving deep-seated (and maybe even internalized and implicit) sexism and racism their due. Let's make sure we're giving narcissism and toxic masculinity their due. Let's hold accountable a culture of treating abuse and assault as forgivable offenses. We need to ask ourselves why so many people can relate to putting or wanting to put their genitalia wherever they please whenever they please and wearing that attitude like it's a badge of honor. Sure, the Dems need some evolution, but we're aware of it and we're in the process of doing it. But a loud and influential group of somebodies with integrity and morality and courage from within the Republican party needs to care about cleaning up their own act. They need to start electing kind and sane people to their party. Period. It's not just on Dems to do the right thing all of the time. The soul of their party needs saving for all of us to be saved. And that's what's so scary to so many of us. When will that happen, if it will happen at all? Anyway, /angry rant. Thanks, Gaga Daily, for being so smart and awesome and providing a place to have (mostly) civil discourse on only the topics of utmost importance! "The truth is..." --L. GreenEyes 1,130
I’m still in utter shock because I just felt the momentum of Kamala’s campaign compared to Hillary and Biden’s. Like she lost every swing state and the popular vote, but she put in so much effort compared to the last two, it is insane. She wasn’t the perfect candidate, but if she were to have won it would have been a true joyful moment in American history. I just can’t believe these poor red folk believe these billionaires care about them, they don’t. They really think they can be them but they never will. Talking to my friend today who would serve a billionaire at a restaurant she worked at and she said it is almost alien like being around them. We truly are ants to them. I live in a red state that passed our abortion rights but it’s like, how long will that really last? It’s not fair that women in certain states can get this health care but women in a different state have to travel just to survive? These are basic human rights, and these people voted all of that away to see “cheaper prices.” I’m also tired of democrats having to take the higher road, at this point it does nothing for us and leaves us stuck in mud. If they can get away with all of this bullsh*t then let’s actually do something. Biden, you got two months with immunity, who cares at this point. Make your mark on history as our current president. This is an overtly simplistic view. If fear was the only factor, then the Democrats and third parties would be much stronger. Trump is the personification of an economic and social necessity right now in the United States, which includes, among other things, the way they're responding to the rise of the multipolar world with Russia, China, Iran, and others; the way they're responding to a multiple-side war and proxy war with Ukraine, Palestine, and others; internally, the way they're dealing with being outcompeted by countries outside the US orbit of influence; internally as well, the constant economic problems, lower standards of living, surging inequality, and surging debt, among many, MANY other interlinked problems. The US ruling class is fighting to the death with itself over the way they should tackle all of these symptoms of a waning world influence. This election, far from being "the most consequential elections of a lifetime" (despite repeating this time and time again, even Hillary Clinton said that "America is much bigger than one election"), is another expression of that confrontation. As I've said time and time again, if your diagnosis of this election is to blame the "left", blame Trump individually, or saying that "everyone's afraid that's why they follow him", then you won't get anywhere and there will be a million problems that you won't be able to explain. You are a dreamer if you believe any of that to be true. It's just you said you agreed with some parts but then proceeded to only mention the parts you disagreed with which was the overall gist of the post in its entirety. The main reason why Trump's entire MO was based around insulting the Dems is because that's what they've done to Republican voters for years and it was very much seen as a "just desserts" and "if you dish it out, you'd better learn to take it" concept. Republicans are sick of being cited as the bad guys and Democrats looking down their noses at them and always assuming the worst. Not everyone is a lifelong voter either way so to act like you're bad and that's all you'll ever be because of the way you voted is too basic and extreme. The reactions from Democrats right now are causing Trump fans to pee themselves laughing because they see this as proving how weak they are, which makes them not exactly an attractive group to join. They say joining the Trump side is like joining a big happy family but leftists are so depressed and fear mongering. Trump fans talk in positives and how they're going to improve things, Democrats talk in negatives and how the other side is going to do bad things and take rights away. People are naturally drawn to what makes them feel good, seen and heard and the Democratic party isn't doing that for many when they act like disagreeing with them on one issue makes you a bad person. MAGA wasn't a phrase that became a viral phenomenon complete with caps until Trump came along. Anyone trying to replicate that and pick up where he left off will be seen as a second-rate pretender. Not denying the sentiment is going to hang around the Republican party like a bad smell for a long time but the party will change when Trump's no longer a part of it. They're scared to upset him right now as they've not been this relevant or "cool" in years so they want to hold on to him. But once he's no longer useful, they'll bring in new blood to whip up a similar feeling again but it won't be the same. It's highly unlikely the people will vote the same party into power over and over, it naturally ebbs and flows. It can't be a world ending reaction every time the Republicans win. View it as a simple handing over of (temporary) power and the 4 years will pass a whole lot easier.

View it as a simple handing over of (temporary) power and the 4 years will pass a whole lot easier. In my first reply, my entire first paragraph was me agreeing with you. To the points you made in your first paragraph, I think that it is obvious that people don't like to be demonized. On that point, I agree. I think that Trump supporters feel demonized and put down by Democrats, and from a purely electoral perspective, I think it's wrong to do that. Like you said, you're not encouraging people or getting any new votes by insulting the electorate. That being said, I think (purely from a moral standpoint) they deserve to be demonized. We are not talking about "normal" Republicans. Trump stands on the promise of racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, and xenophobic rhetoric and policies. Again, I understand that demonizing these people isn't going to attract them to "our" side, but you gotta call a spade a spade. If people want to debate and discuss real issues, that's perfectly fine. But when so much of the Republican Party is just blatantly bigoted, there is almost no room for coherent discussion. Also, I want to put out when you said, "They say joining the Trump side is like joining a big happy family but leftists are so depressed and fear mongering. Trump fans talk in positives and how they're going to improve things, Democrats talk in negatives and how the other side is going to do bad things and take rights away." Are you talking about that from the perspective of a Trump supporter or do you genuinely believe that? From the perspective of a Trump supporter, yeah, that's what they believe, but if we want to operate in reality, that's simply untrue. Kamala's whole campaign was literally about bringing up hope and joy: two words that consistently defined her campaign's message. Trump's rhetoric is founded on fearmongering. He blames liberals, he blames the media, he blames the immigrants, he blames other Republicans who don't like him, etc. They talk about "how they're going to improve things," sure, but in a way that's centered around nationalist, Christian-based authoritarianism. Trump supporters also don't talk in positives at all, unless you think them saying stuff like "your body, our choice" to women is their version of "positive." Finally, to your last paragraph, I think you are fundamentally misunderstanding that Trump represents a long-term movement that, if unchecked, could result in serious and very dangerous consequences. MAGA may not get another leader to the level of Trump, but that isn't going to stop it from continuing the way it is. The party has fundamentally shifted. Sure, it might not stay this way forever, but it will take generations upon generations to strip that away. Trump is one person, but the people who support him (which is tens of millions of people in the US) are the ones with the power. He represents bigoted and discriminative viewpoints, and that will never go away. And yes, while it's unlikely that the same party stays in power forever, the point is that the Republicans now are dangerous. We cannot treat it like a "simple handing over of (temporary) power" when Trump incited an insurrection when he first had to leave office. He is a dangerous man and he and his base have only gotten more extreme. We cannot guarantee he'll leave peacefully or that he won't fundamentally change how politics operates, especially now that the Supreme Court has practically given him immunity to do anything. Franch Toast 27,737
I feel like y'all are treating this like it's going to be a repeat of his first term. It has the potential to be much, much worse. Go read Project 2024. It's absolutely spine-chilling, and the Repubs will control all branches of government, so he and Elon Musk and Peter Thiel (the real people to fear) are going to have unchecked power. I pray it won't be as bad as what they've laid out there. The only potentially saving grace is that Trump gives up on half of the things he claims he's going to do and fires people who turn on him, plus all those egos clashing may cause a traffic jam where hopefully nothing much happens. But I fear Trump is just a puppet at this point. It's Musk, Thiel, and the Heritage Foundation who terrify me. It's like giving Dr. Evil unchecked power.
