Lady Rah Rah 1,945
What worries me about donations is at least in the UK, a lot of charities are set up so the people at the top line their pockets and only a small percentage actually goes where it’s meant to. I’ve donated to LGBTQ+ charities in the past and it just makes me sad to think a lot of it probably didn’t go where it should’ve gone. I hope these charities are different. Chromatica will live on forever.
Dennis 8,391
Thank god that Ariana finally let us know that we can donate to Gaza, 8 months into the war! I can't with the whole celebrity thing. Y'all don't need permission or encouragement from celebrities to invest in political movements you care about. It shouldn't even be their place to tell you about it. And deep down, none of them really care that much. It's like people are so desperate for validation from celebrities, when they're probably the least educated people on most political issues. 1

The fact that you're getting so worked up about a celebrity encouraging people to raise funds for people affected by a literal genocide says a lot really. The campaign gained 20k+ dollars in less than an hour because of her. Of course we don't need celebs to validate our struggle but it's good that they're shedding light on shit that matters and helping in raising funds and awareness. I just think it's sad that people wait for celebrities to donate or become aware of something that has been on the news for 8 months now? Now we're congratulating celebrities for sharing donation links in a story? It comes off as performative. But if that's the type of activism you want to see from celebrities, sure. At least The Weeknd donated 2.5M$ of his own money. This whole "block celebrities" movement (which is going viral on tiktok) is encouraging performative activism. Celebs will now pretend to care and share some donation link rather than actually advocate from a place of deep conviction. Someone made a thread about a celeb sharing a donation link. But since you wanna have this conversation: Ariana has been liking posts about Palestine for months now, she didn't just suddenly change tides because she's scared of getting blocked. We literally dont know what she's done behind the scenes. So basically if they post about it, it's performative, and if they don't, it's not enough? It's better than people gain awareness at some point than they remain ignorant forever. How do you know what her convictions are? Do you know her on a personal level? What I know is that she at least made a small difference publicly, even if it's 76 years later. And that's more than most celebrities who are too stuck up and afraid of the repercussions to even bother posting a story let alone a donation link. alsemanche 91,816
This is probably the most thought I've put into celebs speaking up about Palestine, mind you, because there's so many more important things in life at the moment. If you're saying she's done a lot more than just share a donation link, i'll take your word for it. I think the bigger point i was trying to make, I'm just not a fan into pressuring celebrities into performative activism. When they decide to advocate for certain issues, I want it to come from a place of deep conviction and do it in a meaningful way. That's all.
