I always thought she grew up rich and the whole trailer park persona thing was a shtick.

It was all real. Her father got rich later in life, once Lana had reached adulthood. She wasn't born into wealth (if anything, her songs with names like Old Money are the aesthetic shtick). She got into a lot of lot of trouble as a kid, became an alcoholic at 15 and even tried to kill herself, all of which caused a massively strained relationship with her parents (detailed in her song, Fingertips) and was sent away to Kent Boarding School as a rehab (detailed in This Is What Makes Us Girls). When she got out, she moved to Long Island with her aunt and uncle and worked as a waitress (brought up in White Dress). She then spent the next few years living with boyfriends and crashing on sofas while she did a university degree at Fordham University. Its been known that she did drugs at various points, even stuff as strong as cocaine (mentioned in Yayo) and injecting heroin (mentioned occasionally in songs Cruel World, Heroin and F**k It I Love You). She then performed in bars and nightclubs in Brooklyn on the underground scene under various names like Sparkle Jump Rope Queen and Lizzy Grant And The Phenomenon. She submitted demos to record labels and got a deal with Five Points and used the $10,000 she got to move into a mobile home in New Jersey. Her debut album, Lana Del Ray aka Lizzy Grant performed so bad that it was removed from digital platforms as her label couldn't fund it. She got out the deal and moved to London, UK where she even acted in a friend's short film. She then independently released her self-made music video of Video Games to YouTube in 2011 (up until fairly recently she had 2 YouTube channels, her official one run by her record label and her original independent one) and it became a viral hit and Interscope immediately picked her up and the rest is history.

But, naturally, when she broke out onto the scene, the critics just heard "millionaire's daughter" and her fate was sealed. I've noticed the public are a lot more willing to assume you're a puppet product of a record label when you're female too. Lana's also such an enigma, that she's rarely spoken about most of this stuff as she likes her privacy. You have to listen to her more recent albums to discover the majority of it.

did lana ever say that? because i see it mentioned again and again and it makes no sense

what funding do you need to keep an album on itunes?

it was removed because lana got a new deal and they wanted the album to disappear, not because it did poorly

you can read about it here:

"a rich model" doesn't really describe her early years well lol

"sent to a boarding school"

her uncle worked there and she had a scholarship :vegas:

her being rich or not was not my point anyways and since nobody will ever know for sure how wealthy they were or not - who really cares

Exactly. Even with a scholarship that would’ve been expensive. Their tuition is $74,000 today :air: which would’ve been around $40k in 2000? It’s also not a rehab so that would be another expense.

I like Lana but it’s funny when fans act like she had such a humble upbringing.

People say her parents had money, but they didn't have money until she was older and I don't think she really benefitted from it and I think it was mostly just in stocks. She has gone on the record to say she didn't really have money personally until Born To Die album was successful

That doesn't matter to those with lack-mentality.

Please allow me to take a moment to explain why you're both wrong.

$74,000 today is inexpensive compared to what most people pay. I know a bar tender in 150k student loan debt. I'm sure you've heard of similar situations.

But that's not even the real point. :littlepotter: :smh:

The real point, is that her parents made the decision to save their daughter's life by sending her away to live in another place, away from the drama, where she could get clean, become a disciplined student and finally come into her own and begin the journey of "finding herself" for real, before it was too late.

They knew what their daughter was capable of, the potential she had, and understood the exact obstacles preventing her from becoming who she was always meant to be. You call that spoiled. I call that good parenting.

My parents did the same. If you had children, you'd realise that you would pay any amount of money to save their lives. Your complaint is "lucky for some" 'well I don't have that kind of money" "and she wasn't privileged????"

Addiction is real. And it is fatal

Sending her to Kent Boarding School specifically was smart af.

It wouldn't matter to me if she were the daughter of a billionaire. How would that erase her story? How could that make her pain and suffering and mental ill health any less real than yours or mine? How does that diminish her natural songwriting ability or her validity as an artist? How does that strip away her right to expression and, in turn, her need to be heard?

Thank F*CK she got that scholarship. Sure, my parents saved my life by sending me to live elsewhere. But Lana's discography helped it stay saved.

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

She had a scholarship which literally means you don't pay. Such students have to maintain a good pass grade in subjects and be well behaved or they'll get their scholarship removed and that's what used as the form of payment.

But the whole point of a scholarship is you don't pay a thing. Her parents thought she was going to die from overdose or suicide and when you're that afraid, you'll do anything to save your child's life. It's a story that's happened to many wayward children. Families have had to go without, sell their car, take on second jobs, take out a loan, etc. to pay for their child to go to school that would take care of them. And when she says it was used as rehab, her parents treated it like rehab - a place where she'll be locked in with a curfew, constantly be under the watchful eye of teachers, be unable to get her hands on drink and drugs and be away from negative influences, all while achieving a fine education that'll look amazing on a future resume. If you like her, why are you so unwilling to believe her past is true? There are artists with much more shocking and unbelievable backstories than that.
