hELXIG 41,932
I can definitely understand character makeup to make an actor look like the real person they're portraying but... why did they make it so huge?? If anything, knowing the stereotypes, they should have been conservative on the size... What were they thinking? I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin. River 107,350
I mean, it is huge lol but to say that it's antisemitic is a bit of a reach, there wasn't anything malicious behind it, only lack of deep thought. Steven Spielberg is one of producers and he wouldn't let is pass if he felt that it's antisemitic. His fart felt like a kiss
Emvee 7,835
There’s so much ACTUAL antisemitism on social media these days but this is what the media focuses on… because a celebrity is involved and it will get them clicks.

Steven Spielberg is one of producers and he wouldn't let is pass if he felt that it's antisemitic. I think there's a point to be made in bringing up the word antisemitism but that point isn't "this is antisemitic period point blank", the point is "this is is antisemitic imagery even if the intention of it isn't to be antisemitic." Portraying ethnic Jews as having large and pointed or hooked noses has been a thing for hundreds of years, all rooted in the same thing. But it's especially notable as a fixture in Nazi propaganda, and it's these Nazi propaganda pieces that are still very widely known in modern culture. The Nazis would portray Jews this way because it 1) Allowed them to expose the "genetic inferiority" of Jews when compared to Hitler's aryan ideals and 2) It allowed them to give Jews a monstrous like appearance in order to further stoke distrust and fear of Jews in the public. That's why I find this to be such an egregious oversight on the part of Bradley and everyone else. Leonard Bernstein's nose was not that large, and it was not that pointed. It comes across as if they went out of their way to make the nose look as stereotypically Jewish as possible and that leaves a bad taste because it was wholly unnecessary when Bradley could've just as easily been Bernstein without the prosthetic. Like I said, I don't think they were intending for this to come off the way that it does and for that reason I don't think calling period point blank antisemitic is correct to say because there's lack of intention. But I do think it is fair to say that it's antisemitic imagery, whether it means to be or not. Overall I just cannot believe that this film has passed through so many hands, including a man like Spielberg, and no one has pointed out that this is probably the worst possible thing they could've done to make Bradley look like Leonard Bernstein. It's even more baffling when it's literally the only thing they've done to make him look like Bernstein.

Well...like I said in my post above, I don't think it's a completely meritless conversation to be having because while it doesn't intend to be, this is antisemitic imagery. There's no two ways about it. It's just not done with negative intent which I think is the important distinction to be made.

I mean, I’m Jewish myself, I think it’s not such a big deal, we’re not in Nazi Germany anymore, the Jewish nose is an attribute that we should be proud of and be proud that actors are willing to portrait us with it, instead of keeping the big nose as a Nazi stereotype and keep it as a bad thing. I see. Well, you've got more room to speak on the matter than I do! And I'm glad that it hasn't offended you or made you feel uncomfortable. It seems to be getting a lot of mixed responses in the Jewish community, so ultimately it's best to listen to what people within that community like yourself have to say. I didn't mean to come across as talking at or down at you on the matter, I was just trying to explain my own perspective and by extension I think the perspective a lot of people both Jewish and not are taking on it. Especially right now when antisemitism is more prevalent than it has been in many years, I definitely see why one would want to be proudly show the features of the community as well as why one would be wary of hedging so closely to a stereotype. So I do want to apologize if I've come across as trying to position myself as knowing more or having a more important voice in the conversation than you. Not my intention at all, and thank you for sharing your own personal perspective on it!
