Lily Rose Depp has addressed nepotism claims in a candid new interview with Elle in which she also discussed the challenges of growing up in the spotlight.

The daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, 23, slammed the idea that she has landed roles due to family connections, saying: 'Nothing is going to get you the part except for being right for the part'.

However the model - who is set to star in HBO's upcoming series The Idol - did admit that who she is helped her 'get her foot in the door' but that she still has to work hard.

“The internet seems to care a lot about that kind of stuff. People are going to have preconceived ideas about you or how you got there, and I can definitely say that nothing is going to get you the part except for being right for the part,” she says.
“The internet cares a lot more about who your family is than the people who are casting you in things. Maybe you get your foot in the door, but you still just have your foot in the door. There’s a lot of work that comes after that.”

She raises a good point. Speaking solely about the entertainment industry, countless offspring and family of famous people have used their connections to book agents, managers, recording contracts, and acting roles. And they'd be foolish not to. But, as Lily Rose says, that's not the end of the road.

Off the top of my head: Liza Minnelli, Jeff Bridges, Kurt Russell, Jane Fonda, Patricia Arquette, Natalie Cole, Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Mariska Hargitay, Norah Jones, Jeff Buckley and countless other fabulous talents who had the advantage of being descended from fame, but who undoubtedly earned their careers. Talent is talent, and if you don't have "it", no amount of connections will help you.

Girl bye thousands of people come to LA and perish working 3 jobs while auditioning for everything they can stop framing your privilege as something negligible to underline your personal effort in the success you have.

Is there some reason my LG7 isn't here? Has she died or something?

They're not simply "claims" though, it is the truth :laughga: privilege makes a huge difference and everyone knows that. No nepotism child has ever been famous purely or mostly because of "talent". It always, always comes down to connections first.

So long ggd, it was nice while it lasted.

There was no points made… She still got the part thanks to nepotism… is sad because there is a long list of people with no “connections” wanting to get into the film industry, And here come Jonny Deep’s daughter taking not a supporting role but THE main role…that’s a slap :awkney:

So sick of elite kids trying to give themselves the all American boot strap story. You are where you are bc of your dad (and mom). Period. You have a following bc of your dad. Still do the work of course but trying to paint a nice coating on nepotism and wealth hoarding is dumb lol and as for this being an uncomfy convo, well it should be lol that’s not to say don’t take advantage of the privilege. Others would. But the price that comes with that is the comparatively uneven cost of bearing some critique. It’s silly to be like “omg you get to star in an hbo show and stand to gain a ton of exposure and wealth from it and all it costs you is having to deal with some people saying you didn’t earn it” and expect anyone to be like aww poor baby lol

She seems to forget that tons of people won't be able to get their foot in the door because someone with more privilege is already standing there :koons:

The work that comes after doesn't negate the privilege that gets you there.

You can acknowledge nepotism and the fact that her career has been earned way easier than most, while also acknowledging that she is can be very talented and deserving of her career. They aren't mutually exclusive.

People seem to think that if you have connections or you come from a famous or well-connected family, that means you never would have "made it" without that. While that's probably true in some cases, it's not true in others. Nobody can tell me that Whitney Houston's talent wouldn't have gotten her the career she had even if she had been born into a different family with no connections to the music industry. Having said that, "the foot in the door" is one of the most important parts of building a career in showbusiness and it's kinda ridiculous when these famous musicians or actors try to downplay it.

This. Nepotism is already being in the room with zero effort on your part. Whether you are talented in your own right is a different question.

They always say "it only helps at first, to get known by the bosses but it's not what's gonna convince them."

It's very probably true but standing out in a giant crowd is already a huge step seing the ocean of wannabe actors...

Also she's a great actress imo ( and gorgeous, I mention it since it's clearly a criteria for Hollywood sadly ) but she's far to be the only one. The other ones with her "strengths" will see her be preferred to them for sure.

Yeah no :ladyhaha:

1. Being rich has massive advantages, She can afford to spend all her time focusing on acting without having to worry about a day job or rent. She can take on as much as she wants with a massive safety net, A regular person can't do that and generally has nothing to fall back on if something doesn't work out.

2. Having celebrity parents gives you status in Hollywood, You're already marketable and your name will carry you.

3. Nepotism babies automatically have insane connections to get into any industry they want, a regular person either has zero or gets lucky.
