This is what she said during an interview with Rolling Stone España

"As immodest as it may sound that I say it, the Mexican market changed as a result of my appearance. It was a little pluralized market, in a country where norteño music prevailed, which sold and sells about 6 million copies a year , and in which most of the artists were older and sang sweet ballads ... and suddenly a 19-year-old girl with bicolor hair and a flared bodice appears singing a song to the rhythm of a pop disco that says "El Amor Coloca" and that overnight tops the charts. I think it fills a gap, and that is shown in the number of imitators that emerged "

We already had Paulina Rubio, Thalia, Fey, Alejandra Guzmán, Gloria Trevi, Luis Miguel, and she basically did say that came to teach us what real pop music was, like girl Alejandra Guzmán and Gloria Trevi were even better than you when you came and Alejandra had very sexual and had a very unapologetic approach to music and where do I begin with Gloria Trevi, Trevi was literally changing our pop culture and not just in Mexico but in Latinamerica. She obviously meant that comment in the most derogatory and reductive possible way about the state of "Mexican" music.

Trying to defend her dismissive and undertone xenophobic comment is like saying that Trump likes Mexicans even though he literally called us rapists (though some of us are good in his own words). The interview and her words were never twisted. She knew what she said and she shouldn't have.

20 years later and mexicans didn't get over this? It was proven the interviewer twisted Monica's words (it was confessed by that woman herself). Monica started her career in Mexico and she's always been so spoken about her love for the country so it's obvious those words are not her feelings. Maybe she should have been more clear denying that interview or even suing the publication but that hurt her a lot and the damage was already done. It seems Mexico doesn't want to know the truth and keeps on believing those words, but even if she is not loved there anymore, don't say her career is over cause she reached the diva level in her native country Spain, is seen like a goddess for thousands and appears in a lot of tv shows nowadays (as an example just look at what song they chose for the first lypsinch in the spanish edition of Drag Race).

And seeing how you justify (and reading one article you posted) why Maná is "hated" in Mexico gives me an idea of what happened with Monica: "Maná is hated because people don't consider them a rock band" "Maná is hated by mexicans because they represent what Mexico is" "Maná is hated because they arouse envy"... Wow such a strong reasons :reductive:

you guys, thanks for sharing, I discovered some great stuff here

I'd be honest with you, I don't speak Spanish, so I only know some of popular stuff. ain't gonna lie Despacito & latin explosion at that time got me digging Spanish songs.

I started digging from recent "tropical/ reggaeton" Daddy Yankee, Rosalia, Shakira, Carlos Vives (heck I started digging from La Bicicleta, and gosh I love his whole Discography), Marc Anthony, Enrique, Alejandro Sans. So, pretty much 2000's later stuff.

I'd love to dig some great 80s/90s stuff.

I agree with you on the artists that came before her, even though she changed a generation those words were indeed inmodest and even cocky (doesn’t matter if the interviewer changed it) , nobody is 100% original, but I never perceived her as she though she was superior than Mexican artists

I really feel some people were pissed at her and they wanted to destroy her career in Mexico, no wonder why so many misinformation was spread in traditional media

one thing about Mexican public is that as a foreigner if you praise México and Mexicans the public will open you the doors easy and will forgive you many many mistakes, but if you dare to criticize them you are automatically canceled. Some fair some unfair but that was clearly unfair

I really wouldn’t like to fight with you cause I agree in many things with you. Anyways if we can’t agree totally we can agree to disagree

It's not just in Mexico and foreigners.

Look at what happened at The Dixie Chicks for critizing Bush. People took offense with it and it caused them their career.

It's understandable that if someone implied the whole country was "Hernan Cortezed" with the talent and music quality that she thought she had and México didn't have, then the Mexican public wouldn't give her a chance to redemption. Though she is still very much loved by many here in México.
