Lord Temptation 11,209
Think about it. Reviews - like awards like Grammys, Oscars etc - are all politics, and ultimately and money. So many critics have lambasted what are now considered classics. For example the film The Shining (1980) was slammed by critics when it came out. Then over time audiences rewatch the film and see and feel things they missed the first time round. Gradually, consensus changes and hey presto - The Shining is now considered the finest horror film of all time! In a way, I'm glad most of Gaga's work has been trashed by the media. It means that her work is ahead of the time, because most reviews acknowledge her talent in playing the piano and writing songs. Yet they'll still find reasons to give her albums 3 stars?! On the other hand, artists like Lana, Lorde and to a lesser extent Kesha, are loved by the media. I'm not saying in any way that they don't deserve the acclaim - they absolutely do. But it's better to be remembered by the fans than it is the critics - who notoriously have a habit of changing their minds. Critics always have somebody they love to hate (hi Mother Monster!), and they balance this by favouring others. It's political, it's psychological, it's...a whole lot of talk! "You're so cool, it makes me hate you so much (I hate you so much)." Yeah Gaga is talented and these girls are not even close but then why are those ones hyped. lorde is incredibly talented, you can literally feel it in melodrama the instrumentals are creatively blend experimental and popular sounds, the lyrics are very touching too https://goo.gl/xMgMvJ
Reginald 13,841
These are critically-acclaimed artists because they, like all good artists, know how to craft/convey certain emotions or thoughts, in/to their listeners. In other words, they're talented. It's the same reason that Joanne is critically acclaimed. Anyone can write a basic bop and go top 10, but the songs that these girls (including Gaga) are writing will live on in hearts, and minds, for years, while songs like Look What You Made Me Do, Closer, and Despacito will sound dated and be dismissed as fluff. djBuffoon 12,123
For whatever reason, Gaga is held to a much stricter yet less consistent standard than the other pop girls. It seems like no matter how much creativity and effort she puts in (see, Born This Way and Joanne), many critics will find a way to complain about what she didn't do. Meanwhile, I can't imagine that anyone expected much from Kesha's newest release, so Rainbow for example, while in no way better than albums which scored less on MetaCritic, felt more refreshing and revelatory than it probably is. guestRJ 126
So basically, you're mad that Lorde, Lana and Kesha got higher metacritc scores than gaga I do agree that critics are bias towards certain artist. But Melodrama, Lust for Life and Rainbow were amazing albums and deserved their scores. Critics are bias against gaga though. I feel like when critics start doing retrospective reviews, her albums will be a lot more critically acclaim. For instance. Erotica by Madonna got luke warm reviews when it initially released because during that time Madonna had a lot of controversy and media scrunity. BUT 20+ years later it's lawded by critics for it's impact. Same thing will happen to Gaga.
