But music today really is the worst it's ever been. Agreed. I grew up in the 80s and 90s and I know for a fact that mainstream music was better back then. Maybe that can be extended to the early 2000s, but the point still stands. When I was younger I would listen to the radio all the time. Now, just 5 seconds of that sh*t gives me a headache. And that's why I listen mostly to lesser known artists, and I'm not even saying that to be all hipster, it's just that mainstream music today is nothing but a stinking, steaming pile of soulless, overproduced doo doo, with very few exceptions to the rule. I can relate. Listening to the radio, I used to always be able to find multiple songs I really liked, but today I'm lucky if I like one song every hour. I basically stopped listening to the radio, no wonder everyone streams music nowadays.

The Spice Girls, Madonna, Janet, Marilyn Manson, the Prodigy, Aqua... all these people STOOD THE **** OUT! They were VERY image-driven but they sold MILLIONS of records, they had things to say, and they all sounded different from each other! And I'm only mentioning those who made it huge. What's wrong with music these days? Everything. Music has turned into McDonald's. I'll stream it for free while I'm doing something, I'll listen passively to the first playlist that pops up on Spotify. It's throwaway. There was an integrity, a respect to the artist, in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s that is completely lost. The artist is on Twitter, the artist gets abused all the time, the music NEEDS to be trendy to sell, it NEEDS to feature someone who's in at the moment or it will go unnoticed. It's rapper, rappers, more rappers, some DJs, some more DJs and Justin Bieber. And it ALL sounds the same. Looking at a top10 from 1997 is depressing, there were all kinds of music making it big back then, radio was willing to give songs a chance, the public was eager to find out about different artists, there were novelty acts who were able to make great songs, and legendary bands were still able to score top10 hits. Now? None of that happens. Actually yeah I did live through the 90s. It was bad. Rock was whiney, depressing and bland. Pop was pure plastic bubblegum. Spice Girls, SClub7, Backstreet Boys, BWitched, NSync are all manufactured fake bands, pretty boy and girl dancers miming to a beat. Dance music was cheese. That's why only Europe liked it. Rap on the other hands was violent misogynistic "I'm gonna shoot your mother and rape your sister" crap. Give me a break. Pretty much everything that was popular in the 1990s was awful. EDIT: I do like the early 90s (for hip hop, R&B / new jack swing, house and shoegaze) and the late 90s for French house, and there are a few female singer-songwriters like Tori Amos, Fiona Apple that I love. Also I love Madonna's first two albums of the 1990s (Erotica, Bedtime Stories) , and Janet in the 1990s was brilliant. But most of the 1990s was utter rubbish, and I blame the media for that. Buddy 5,686
Because capitalism and industry. The GP don't choose from a wide selection of songs, they are spoon fed whatever the high ends in the industry wish to supply. These industry elites have a monopoly on almost all promotional outlets, and so their selections are all the simple minded GP see. These people in the industry don't have music quality at the forefront of their minds. They are business men who are only concerned with numbers and profit at the end of the day, and they've mastered their algorithms. Thankfully, due to streaming, these elites are beginning to lose a bit of leverage and I honestly believe we'll see a music reformation happen in the next 10 years now that ALL music is so much more easily accessible. We just have to wait for people to wake up. The industry is scared AF of this and they are doing whatever they possibly can to make sure they still have total control over what we listen to. We must reform radios and charts.Uncreative, untalented, similar mustn't freakin' rule he looks like a pubertal high school student with that face and outfit, disgusting, even my brother has more charisma #notsorry
giskardsb 12,565
you can't bitch about the 90's. maybe pop sucked, but R&B and Rock were getting in on after a pretty dismal 80's.

So The Cure's Disintegration, Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Stone Roses are dismal? Try again. Everyone wants to know why this decade music has been horrible. Well the answer is logic. It's simply the twenty year cycle that has been happening forever. In the 70s there was the 50s revival, in the 80s there was the 60s revival, in the 90s there was the 70s revival, in the 00s there was the 80s revival and now in the 2010s there is the 90s revival. The 2010s suck because the 1990s sucked. We are recycling rubbish from a rubbish decade and that's why the current decade is rubbish. We didn't know the 1990s were rubbish at the time (because the media hyped everything up, the 90s was the decade of hype) but we're starting to realise it now.
