Perhaps this was his first pageant ever but someone must have at least explained to him that 1st runner up is not the same as 1st place. And, I'm sure he knew that 1st runner up wasn't the same as 1st place, but he may have seen "1st" and just instantly thought that that meant "1st place", without reading the entire card. And I also thought that they would tell him through like an earpiece or something, who the winner was. I suppose that didn't work well for crowning Australia's Next Top Model though...
