Liza Minnelli typically slams or boycotts movies associated with her mom, but Lady Gaga's role in "A Star Is Born" could totally change Minnelli's mindset ... TMZ has learned.

Sources close to Liza tell us she absolutely adores Gaga, and it's likely she'll actually go and see the singer play the role her mother, Judy Garland, once filled. If you didn't know -- and if you're under 55, that's likely -- Judy starred in the 1954 version of the movie.

Liza's said she rarely, if ever, watches reboots of Garland flicks ... out of respect for her mother.

The issue? She was as big a lost soul as her daughter. Raddled with years of alcohol and drug abuse. She also, like her daughter, was a huge gay icon.

Judy Garland also spawned the term "friends of Dorothy", a way men used for describing them as homosexuals. From her role as Dotothy in The Wizard of Oz.

This is silly, Judy’s version was a remake.

Barbra went on to remake it as well.

It’s not like Gaga is playing Judy in a biopic.

TMZ made this up.

I don’t think they make things up. They’re upfront with their exclusives

The expression "Friend of Dorthy" existed before Garland played the role of Dorthy. It is either a reference to literary icon and famous fruit fly Dorthy Parker, or a reference to the novel The Wizard of Oz is based on.

But everything else you said was spot on.

Gawdd...how could I have missed that?

Dotothy Parker co-wrote the script to the first screen adapration of ASIB so the references fly all over the place here.

And can we have a moment remembering the last time Liza Minelli was pop culturally significant in this 1989 Pet Shop Boys produced gem?

/flop frenemy of Dorothy, apparently.

You don't just "move on" from the fall of a star like Judy Garland, who burned the brightest and literally went supernova at the end with the work she did. Liza grew up in the spotlight with her mother, a singer of great talent and performer of amazing aptitude, all of which was nurtured by her mother who was as much an addict of work as she was anything else.

Judy died nearly penniless, riddled with grief and depression in front of the public, and aged many years before her time, but a legend none the less. If you grew up knowing Judy in any way, she is truly unforgettable, to be her child left behind I cannot imagine the burden.
