To be fair 9T5 is notoriously more of a pop song and was when she was moving into doing pop. Jolene however is a country/folk mixed song. You can tell by the songwriting.

Like one of the best moments from 5FT2 is when she’s explaining the Joanne “uniform” to Ruth Hogben and Ruth is confused by Gaga donning an understated aesthetic and Gaga, as a way of subliminally communicating that she’s still the same theatrical provocateur underneath it all, takes off her bra and shows her tits to the camera while explaining why she’s dialing it back. Love, love, love ha. I say it all the time but parts of Joanne exist on Mayhem, she was very much trying to fix her image but Joanne was a perfect way for her to reconnect with her roots as a singer-songwriter instead of a “popstar”. That plus the music she made with Tony and for ASIB changed up her approach too. Her songwriting was pretty strong on Mayhem thanks to those eras I think. Joanne — as I’ve said before — is her “coming of age” album where she was going through a down period of figuring out who she is. I’ve never understood why everyone thinks it’s a country record though since there’s only like 1 outright country song (Million Reasons) and 1 country tinged one (Joanne), with a folk song thrown in there too (Sinners Prayer). There’s far more rock and pop in there, with inspiration from The Beatles, Bowie and Beck.

So your solution to a recognized institutional problem is to just not even try? Okay well I guess when they start coming to put us in camps again, we’ll just let them yeah? I’m from Tennessee. Three hours from Nashville. The queer and POC country scene is making so much progress. Getting booked at the bars on the strip, in the old country clubs, playing in the backing band for the Opry. There is ground to be gained and they ARE gaining it, slowly working to change that system little by little, bit by bit, because they refuse to cede ground.

Like, at best it takes inspiration in the same way Mayhem occasionally sounds like something that crawled out of the 70s and 80s then mutated. It's always hit me as more rock coded and her chosen aesthetic was "halfway-to-the-west southerner". I'd put anything on Joanne as closer to tracks like Perfect Celebrity and Vanish Into You than anything on Cowboy Carter or any country album Agreed. Joanne is broadly pop-AC soft rock with some Americana sprinkled in. It never really brushes up against country musically. 2

jimmytimestep 2,965
I have nothing to add here that hasn't already been said, but I just wanted to post to say how much I enjoyed reading this thread. Knowing that our little corner of the internet is so cultured, intelligent, concise, and well-spoken with terrific respect to pretty much every artist mentioned in this thread makes me really happy and happy to be a part of GGD. 1
StrawberryBlond 15,740
It isn't the most controversial thing when she made it clear that this album, plus Renaissance and the upcoming one, are part of a concept album trilogy whereupon she revisits a genre that is known for having majority white artists but actually originated with black people in an attempt to reclaim it. There's nothing there that states that she always listened to all those genres or considers herself to embody one of these genres at heart. So saying, it's also clear that she didn't make these albums because she genuinely resonated with all these genres, she just wanted to try a new idea as she was maybe running out of ideas and didn't want to repeat any of her previous albums. If she never makes another country album again, I won't be surprised. Artists who are struggling with inspiration in their life to write about have long created a concept album where they invented a character and created an entire storyline around it. Just like creating a character, a genre can sometimes be a costume you just put on for one era, nothing more or less.

Genuine question - would anything of hers appeal to me? A particular album, some song suggestions maybe? Sorry, I've never followed her work and am, as you probably know, a classical/80's Synthpop & New Wave + 70's/80's "soft" or experimental rock/extreme Gaga person, no real other post... say 1992 people have appealed much to me but I'm stuck in my ways now. Whenever I hear something of the new crop it never speaks to me at all (not meant to offend!), but if going back a little could help broaden my modern horizons... Any suggestions welcome! Honestly, I totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve always thought her self-titled, Renaissance, Cowboy Carter, and Lemonade were quite good, but I also get them not necessarily being your cup of tea. Renaissance is probably my personal favorite because I love a lot of the 90s club and ballroom influence across the record.
