"Outlaw country" is one of my top genres on Spotify :icant:

Is it though? You may listen to some of the artists, and that's your rights, but doesn't change the fact Nashville don't want POC and LGBTQ people nearby. They have historically maintained systemic barriers, cultural biases, and visible resistance toward inclusive representation

The Nashville industry may have a strong hold over mainstream country levers like the CMAs & Radio, but this is just ignorant of the actual artistic history of country music.

Country originated through numerous black musical cultures like blues, gospel, soul and even folk song traditions from slaves.
One of the biggest & most famous counter-cultural country music genres was a rebellion against Nashville and advocated for civil rights and social justice. Outlaw country literally fought the right-wing country establishment and won becoming some of the most legendary and recognisable faces of country music to this day.

Unsurprising to see something like that said about Beyonce/black artists on GGD, I fear.

Well

English isn’t my first language, so I genuinely didn’t realize that “claiming” could carry the implication that I was questioning whether it was true 😭 I just used it as a synonym for “saying” or “stating.” I wasn’t trying to invalidate the Black roots of country music at all.

Then the signal split in two the sound created stars like me and you✨️

I don’t think it is possible to be born before 2010 and not ever listen to country, anywhere in the world

If you see me posting like crazy, I'm either bored or procrastinating.

Totally fair! My apologies for insinuating that you were. However, after lurking here for years, I have noticed certain "trends" when discussion of Black musicians arises on here. It's a sensitive issue for sure.  :kara:

As someone who teaches it, I second this statement.

Beyonce cosplayed both country and dance music but managed to release good albums both times. Anyone who knows Beyoncé and how she operates can tell you she did not care for country or dance music before she decided to venture into the genre. It’s fun she did it and the narrative behind it is unique but you’re never going to convince me she cared about these genres before she decided to make a project based on them

Oriane

I understand what she did with the album and it's honorable, but it doesn't feel genuine to have a whole album of a genre you never listen to... You can't be great in a genre you don't know and apparently don't enjoy or aren't even curious enough to check it out. It really doesn't help the case of her not being involved in her music's songwriting :green:

With that said, this is from years ago and she might have decided to actually explore the genre before making this album.

Idk I feel like the only way Joanne is cosplay is if you think of it as a trying to be a country record as opposed to just being a classic rock/americana record. Gaga clearly has an affinity for those genres (frequently cites Springsteen and Young) and I don’t really see Joanne is being sonically or aesthetically insincere.

I personally disagree, as the classic rock is deliberately country-fied which drags the tracks down at the start of the album.

And the latter half feels disjointed and at times phoned in.

I've always felt like its an album where she's out of her depth with the genres she's experimenting with.

Eh, agree to disagree I guess. I see a lot of what she’s doing on the album as being more in the vein of what she’s always done: play with styles and genre pastiches, but put her own twist on it. But I get where you’re coming from.
